{"id":9020,"date":"2020-02-12T11:15:42","date_gmt":"2020-02-12T16:15:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=9020"},"modified":"2020-02-12T11:30:06","modified_gmt":"2020-02-12T16:30:06","slug":"passenger-plane-almost-shot-down-over-syria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/passenger-plane-almost-shot-down-over-syria\/","title":{"rendered":"Passenger plane almost shot down over Syria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">In the early hours of Feb 6, a commercial flight en-route to Damascus was <b>forced to divert<\/b> to Russia-controlled Khmeimim air base after <b>coming under fire from Syrian air defences.<\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Cham Wings A320, with 172 people on board, was flying from ORNI\/Najaf to OSDI\/Damascus when the incident took place. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/02\/07\/world\/middleeast\/syria-plane-israel.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span class=\"s1\">The New York Times<\/span><\/a>,\u00a0Syrian air defences directed <b>anti-aircraft gun and missile fire<\/b> against the Airbus, but failed to hit the aircraft.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-9022\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/EQJ43_JUUAA1Gw_-1024x642.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"642\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/EQJ43_JUUAA1Gw_-1024x642.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/EQJ43_JUUAA1Gw_-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/EQJ43_JUUAA1Gw_-768x481.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/EQJ43_JUUAA1Gw_.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>Russia\u2019s Ministry of Defense has since <b>blamed Israel<\/b> <b>for the near-miss <\/b>&#8211; at the time the incident occurred, the Syrian air defence systems had engaged four Israeli F-16s, and Russia claims that these fighter jets were using civilian aircraft as \u201ccover\u201d while conducting air strikes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Russia has accused the Israeli military of <b>putting commercial flights like this at risk<\/b> in the past, by timing their airstrikes on Syria too close to flights arriving at Beirut and Damascus airports. In the past few months there have been a number of air strikes by Israel against military targets in Syria, including OSDI\/Damascus airport, with the Syrian government firing its own missiles over Syrian airspace and along the Lebanese border to repel the attacks.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This latest incident comes just a month after a Ukraine International Airlines passenger plane was <b>shot down shortly after take-off from Tehran<\/b>, killing all 176 people on board. Iran later said its forces had shot it down unintentionally, having mistaken the aircraft radar return for an inbound missile to Tehran.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In the days following, many countries <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/iran-iraq-and-middle-east-airspace-information-page\/\"><span class=\"s1\">issued warnings<\/span><\/a> to <b>avoid the airspace of Iran and Iraq<\/b>, and most airlines other than Middle Eastern carriers have now stopped overflying these countries entirely.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The same is true of Syria &#8211; there are <a href=\"https:\/\/safeairspace.net\/syria\/\"><span class=\"s1\">multiple airspace warnings<\/span><\/a> in place, including a<b> total flight ban<\/b> by the US and German authorities. Some countries add the additional warning to <b>exercise caution when operating anywhere within 200 nautical miles of the country<\/b> &#8211; advice that came into sharp focus in September 2018, when Syrian forces <b>shot down<\/b> a Russian IL-20M transport category aircraft over international waters 20nm off the coast, mistaking it for an Israeli fighter.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/why-are-we-still-flying-airline-passengers-over-war-zones\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9021 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/SYRIA-MED-1024x620.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"620\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/SYRIA-MED-1024x620.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/SYRIA-MED-300x182.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/SYRIA-MED-768x465.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/SYRIA-MED.png 1310w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a>That event significantly changed the risk picture for civil aircraft operating in the vicinity of Syria.
