{"id":7587,"date":"2019-07-15T21:59:06","date_gmt":"2019-07-16T01:59:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=7587"},"modified":"2021-02-19T02:56:00","modified_gmt":"2021-02-19T07:56:00","slug":"pakistan-open","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/pakistan-open\/","title":{"rendered":"At long last, Pakistan declares airspace fully open again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Pakistan airspace is open!<\/strong> In a clearly written, yet quietly announced in-the-dead-of-night Notam, Pakistan has today declared the entirety of its airspace fully open and available for all overflights.<\/p>\n<p>This is very welcome news for long-haul airlines and operators transiting the Middle East and Asia, where finding a usable and safe route route through the region has become akin to navigating a level of Pac-Man with few escape options left.<\/p>\n<p>Pakistan being open again makes the traditional and preferred Europe-Asia route through Afghanistan, Pakistan, and onwards to India available again, and means that city pairs abandoned after the February shutdown will likely be restarted.<\/p>\n<p>The good-news Notam was issued around midnight Pakistan time:<\/p>\n<p>A0710\/19 NOTAMN<br \/>\nQ) OPXX\/QARXX\/\/\/E\/000\/999\/<br \/>\nA) OPKR OPLR<br \/>\nB) 1907151908 C) PERM<br \/>\nE) WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT PAKISTAN AIRSPACE IS OPEN FOR<br \/>\nALL TYPE OF CIVIL TRAFFIC ON PUBLISHED ATS ROUTES<\/p>\n<h4>So, what does this mean?<\/h4>\n<p>In recent months, operators have had to avoid Pakistan and route much further south, as this graphic from an article we worked on with <a href=\"https:\/\/graphics.reuters.com\/INDIA-KASHMIR-AIRLINES\/010091M92G7\/index.html\">Reuters in April<\/a> shows:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-7588\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/After.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"2210\" height=\"1138\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/After.png 2210w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/After-300x154.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/After-768x395.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/After-1024x527.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 2210px) 100vw, 2210px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The impact has been significant. Avoiding Pakistan has meant up to an additional 410 miles, or an hours flying time, for Europe-Asia flights.<\/p>\n<p>For many long-haul operators trying to get to India, the dog-leg around Pakistan made the trip unworkable, either because of fuel endurance, or crew hours.
