{"id":5737,"date":"2018-09-27T13:57:53","date_gmt":"2018-09-27T17:57:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=5737"},"modified":"2020-05-07T12:37:36","modified_gmt":"2020-05-07T16:37:36","slug":"ntsb-current-notam-system-is-just-a-bunch-of-garbage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/ntsb-current-notam-system-is-just-a-bunch-of-garbage\/","title":{"rendered":"NTSB: Current NOTAM system is &#8220;just a bunch of garbage&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You were all very supportive when we wrote the initial article on <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/the-problem-of-bullshit-notams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the BS Notam problem<\/a> last year, and have followed our journey in fixing the problem since then.<\/p>\n<h1>Big news!<\/h1>\n<p>The NTSB called the Notam System a bunch of garbage on Tuesday this week, and assigned probable cause of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ntsb.gov\/news\/events\/Documents\/DCA17IA148-Abstract.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AC759 incident in SFO<\/a> to the Notams that were missed.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"NTSB says Notams are &#039;just a pile of garbage&#039;\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LWLPDOXF7e4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><strong>What this means to OpsGroup is massive fuel to our fire<\/strong>: we are working hard to fix this problem, and having a public facing government organisation like the NTSB come down like a ton of bricks on the Notam System drives us forward in leaps and bounds.<\/p>\n<p>The group members have been decisive in helping us to identify the problem and taking action to fix this. Great work!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-5740\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/unnamed-1024x700.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/unnamed.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/unnamed-300x205.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/unnamed-768x525.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/unnamed-676x462.png 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In solving two of the above five problems, we have been working with ICAO for several months now.\u00a0You all got involved in\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/fsbureau.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u=b75fb5761dc5600b058300642&amp;id=6820769aa0&amp;e=834e1da807\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" data-saferedirecturl=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https:\/\/fsbureau.us2.list-manage.com\/track\/click?u%3Db75fb5761dc5600b058300642%26id%3D6820769aa0%26e%3D834e1da807&amp;source=gmail&amp;ust=1538155362924000&amp;usg=AFQjCNH4Z_W0X7rfW1rk0c8_4kQORGOlWg\">Norm<\/a>,\u00a0<\/strong>and 17,000 Notams later, we happy to report that version 0.1 of Norm is now live on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icao.int\/safety\/iStars\/Pages\/Chat-with-NORM.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ICAO<\/a> website.\u00a0Norm is a bot &#8211; an AI, that has learned what Notams look like, and thanks to OpsGroup rating these 17,000 Notams, is also learning which ones are critical and which ones are not.<\/p>\n<p><strong>He&#8217;s still young<\/strong>.
