Notice anything strange?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On second thoughts &#8211; let\u2019s ask another question, that might be easier: Notice anything familiar? I\u2019ll venture a guess: probably not. This is a North Atlantic Plotting Chart from the 70\u2019s (hauled out of the Flight Service Bureau archives), and it\u2019s the area just west of the Shannon FIR, at 20W. <b>Busy place, back in 1973<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>So what are we looking at, exactly? Most of the coloured lines are LORAN lines (dashed ones indicating the station is only receivable at night); but there is also a range ring for the BUSHMILLS (MWN)\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sonne_(navigation)\">Consol Navigation<\/a> Station on the North coast of Ireland (long since gone).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC_0481.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-398 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC_0481-1024x637.jpg\" alt=\"Shannon FIR 1973\" width=\"676\" height=\"421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC_0481-1024x637.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC_0481-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC_0481-768x478.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/DSC_0481-676x421.jpg 676w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Most interesting is the waypoint marked JULIETT. It\u2019s 52\u201930N and 20W: Officially known as an Ocean Station Vessel (OSV), this was a <b>Weather Ship<\/b> operated by the UK and the Netherlands and permanently in position. It was\u00a0used back in those days to take regular radiosonde readings, collect weather reports, act as a radio beacon (NDB on 370Khz), and provide Search and Rescue (SAR) cover.<\/p>\n<p>There were 10 such ships on the Atlantic; A through E operated by the US coast guard; and I through M by the Europeans.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-401\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/cumulu11-1.jpg\" alt=\"cumulu11-1\" width=\"634\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/cumulu11-1.jpg 634w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/cumulu11-1-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Howard Cox, in &#8220;Ocean Weather Ships&#8221;, writes: &#8220;Light aircraft were reasonably frequent \u2018visitors\u2019 on their delivery flights to the UK or\u00a0Europe. Without exception there was always something not working \u2013VHF but no\u00a0HF or vice versa, no heating, no DF and so it went on. I remember one occasion\u00a0when we were on Juliet when we were requested by Shanwick Oceanic Control to\u00a0keep the ships navigation beacon on continuously and to keep a continuous radar\u00a0watch on from a certain time. An aircraft being ferried to Europe via the UK had\u00a0taken off from Gander and lost his radio compass before he had even reached the US\u00a0Coast Guard cutter manning Ocean Station Charlie.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Cox continues, &#8220;They had brought him over the\u00a0top of them using their radar, \u2018set\u2019 the radar beam in the direction of Juliet and guided\u00a0the pilot as far as they could along the beam till out of range. We did likewise when\u00a0he reached our part of the ocean, setting the beam in the direction of Shannon Airport\u00a0in Ireland and guiding him along that until he passed out of range. In the meantime\u00a0Shannon did the same when he got in range of them.
