After nearly a century of keeping pilots flipping, folding and cursing in cramped cockpits, <strong>Jeppesen is <a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.jeppesen.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/Service-Bulletin-5-Sep-2025.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">calling it a day<\/a> on its paper chart service.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"163\" data-end=\"329\"><strong>It will be retired by 31 Oct 2026,<\/strong> closing a chapter that began when Elrey Jeppesen first sold his little black book of hand-drawn airfield notes in the 1930s.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"331\" data-end=\"481\">For many, it\u2019s like losing an old friend. One that was heavy, expensive and always due an update. But it never froze, crashed or ran out of battery.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"483\" data-end=\"568\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">If you still like the feel of paper in hand, Jeppesen says<strong> a few options will remain&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\">Why end a good thing?<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Essentially, cost.<\/strong> Paper chart operations aren\u2019t cheap &#8211; printing, shipping, updates and physical inventory are all expensive. Something that Jeppesen itself refers to as the \u2018growing costs of managing paper.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The industry has overwhelmingly transitioned to digital charts thanks to the proliferation of EFBs, tablets and integrated avionics. And all good things must come to an end.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_28954\" style=\"width: 1210px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-28954\" class=\"size-full wp-image-28954\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/s-l1200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"1200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/s-l1200.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/s-l1200-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/s-l1200-1024x1024.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/s-l1200-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/s-l1200-768x768.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/s-l1200-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/s-l1200-140x140.jpg 140w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/s-l1200-500x500.jpg 500w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/s-l1200-350x350.jpg 350w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/s-l1200-1000x1000.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/s-l1200-800x800.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-28954\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Jeppesen&#8217;s legacy paper chart service will end Oct next year.<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>But what is the operational impact of this change?<\/strong> And how will you be affected if still using paper in the flight deck?<\/p>\n<h4 class=\"p1\">Operational Impact<\/h4>\n<p class=\"p1\">If your operation still relies on paper Jepps, now is the time to <strong>plan ahead. <\/strong>The exact impact depends on what part of the law you operate under.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"background-color: #f4fc03;\">Part 91:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">With the exception of Part 91K, Part 91 operators can switch from paper to digital charts without FAA authorisation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>But there are a few caveats:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li class=\"p1\">The PIC must ensure that the electronic charts being used are <strong>current and accurate. <\/strong><\/li>\n<li class=\"p1\">You\u2019ll also need a <strong>backup (a second device or app).<\/strong> Printed charts also count (but obviously, you\u2019ll soon need to print them yourself).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p class=\"p1\">In other words, you can switch at your own discretion as long as you cover the basics above.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"background-color: #f4fc03;\">Parts 91K, 125, and 135:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The \u2018pathway to paperless\u2019 is a little more complicated.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>All require OpSpec A061 that authorises EFB use.<\/strong> You\u2019ll need to adequately show that there are procedures and training in place for crew, and that there is a backup plan for failures.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">There will also need to be procedures in place for <strong>device mounting, power compliance and the update process<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For Part 91K operators, the lead time is typically 1-3 months. In the case of Part 135, this is longer. Most go through a \u2018paperless transition\u2019 period &#8211; operating with both paper and electronic charts until fully approved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span style=\"background-color: #f4fc03;\">Part 121:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Most (if not all) are likely already approved for EFB use.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If there are any outliers still out there, a <strong>full formal approval is required.<\/strong> This typically takes 3-6 months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This involves the airline submitting a detailed EFB program to the FAA\u2019s Principal Operations Inspector.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The process is structured and lengthy and includes factors like power\/heat analysis, training and other risk assessments.
