{"id":2872,"date":"2019-04-03T10:34:02","date_gmt":"2019-04-03T14:34:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=2872"},"modified":"2021-06-10T00:26:55","modified_gmt":"2021-06-10T04:26:55","slug":"greenbacks-and-greenland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/greenbacks-and-greenland\/","title":{"rendered":"Greenbacks and Greenland &#8211; $3000 to file as an alternate"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Trans-atlantic operators who have been putting <strong>RALT\/BGBW<\/strong> or <strong>RALT\/BGSF<\/strong> on their flight plans have been receiving<strong> hefty invoices post-flight.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Both BGBW\/Narsarsuaq and BGSF\/Kangerlussuaq are popular airports to use in flight planning as an emergency divert and for ETOPS, as they are perfectly positioned right in the middle of the big empty chunk of nothing that exists between the east coast of Canada and Iceland.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-7189\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GREENLAND-1024x621.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"945\" height=\"573\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GREENLAND-1024x621.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GREENLAND-300x182.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GREENLAND-768x466.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GREENLAND-1612x978.jpg 1612w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GREENLAND-1116x677.jpg 1116w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GREENLAND-806x489.jpg 806w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GREENLAND-558x338.jpg 558w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GREENLAND-655x397.jpg 655w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/GREENLAND.jpg 1952w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 945px) 100vw, 945px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Both airports are open Mon-Sat 11-20z (8am-5pm local time), and completely closed on Sundays and on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.officeholidays.com\/countries\/greenland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">public holidays<\/a> (watch out for these sneaky ones!).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So if you file a flight plan with either as alternates from Mon-Sat 11-20z, you won\u2019t get charged.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But outside these hours, you <b>will<\/b> get charged. It gets slightly complicated here: the charges in the box below apply when they stay open for you to use as an ETOPS alternate at any time that they are <b>closed <\/b>(which is between 20-11z), but there\u2019s an extra 10% charge on top of that for any time they are <b>closed and fast asleep in bed<\/b>, (which is between 00-08z). Got it?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-2874\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BGBW-charges-1024x228.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"676\" height=\"151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BGBW-charges-1024x228.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BGBW-charges-300x67.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BGBW-charges-768x171.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BGBW-charges-676x150.png 676w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/BGBW-charges.png 1672w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 676px) 100vw, 676px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Important to note: these get charged even if you don\u2019t actually divert to BGBW\/BGSF.<\/strong> 15,870 Danish Krone equates to $2585 USD!<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If you want them to stay open for you to use as an ETOPS alternate, you need to put RALT\/BGBW or RALT\/BGSF in your flight plan &#8211; they\u2019ll see it, and will stay open for at the times you need. But bear in mind that if they&#8217;re closed already at the time you file your flight plan, they won&#8217;t see it! So they prefer you to do it properly and arrange everything in advance by email: get in touch with them at <a href=\"mailto:PPR@mit.gl\">PPR@mit.gl<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">If you get an invoice from a company called Global Aviation Data A\/S, unfortunately it\u2019s not a scam email &#8211; they are the guys who work with Greenland Airports to collect the monies owed when operators request these airports to stay open for them.<\/p>\n<p>The really interesting thing is this &#8211; if more than one operator asks BGBW\/BGSF to stay open for them <strong>at the same time<\/strong>, the costs are<strong>\u00a0not shared<\/strong> between these operators &#8211; they both have to pay the standard fees!
