{"id":28634,"date":"2025-09-24T00:03:04","date_gmt":"2025-09-24T04:03:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=28634"},"modified":"2025-09-29T05:26:13","modified_gmt":"2025-09-29T09:26:13","slug":"shanwick-delays-ocr-until-post-summer-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/shanwick-delays-ocr-until-post-summer-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"Shanwick Delays OCR Until Post-Summer 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"998\">Big update on Shanwick\u2019s plans: they\u2019ve now confirmed that <strong>the move to the new Oceanic Clearance Removal (OCR) system won\u2019t happen until sometime after summer 2026.<\/strong> That\u2019s a fairly significant shift, as earlier expectations were that it might roll out by the end of summer 2025.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"998\">Why the delay?<\/h4>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"998\">Over in Gander, when OCR went live last December, <strong>things got messy.<\/strong> Controller workload spiked as crews struggled with the new procedures \u2014 there were lots of extra radio calls, some confusion over routing, and even a few close calls that controllers had to step in and prevent. More on that <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/back-to-the-radio-gander-goes-voice-only-pre-oceanic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"998\">Shanwick has pointed to a <strong>mix of factors behind the delay<\/strong> \u2014 including their own operational complexities and the issues Gander has been dealing with since their rollout. Taking more time now gives them a chance to refine the process and avoid similar issues when they do eventually make the switch.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"0\" data-end=\"998\">So, let&#8217;s have a <strong>nice clear set of steps to follow \u2014\u00a0<\/strong>depending on whether your headed east or west over the NAT&#8230;<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"686\" data-end=\"729\">Going eastbound via Gander<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Send your RCL 60\u201390 mins before the OEP via ACARS (it\u2019s for ATC planning only, no clearance will be issued!)<\/li>\n<li><em>May 5 \u2013 Dec 31, 2025: Note that any route changes before oceanic entry will be given by VHF voice when in Gander airspace. Moncton and Montreal will continue to issue CPDLC UM79 route amendments.<\/em><\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t request an Oceanic Clearance \u2013 there isn\u2019t one here anymore.<\/li>\n<li>Maintain your domestic cleared level unless ATC assigns a different one.<\/li>\n<li>Once in Oceanic airspace, expect further changes via CPDLC or HF.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><strong>If Gander isn\u2019t issuing Oceanic Clearances anymore, why send an RCL?<\/strong> This may very well be the crux of the mass pilot confusion experienced so far. The answer: the RCL is now just a planning tool \u2014 you\u2019re not asking for permission, only notifying them, because they still need your exact routing and timing to safely manage traffic. You continue to fly your last assigned domestic route and level unless ATC gives you a change. The confusion comes from the wording: no Oceanic Clearance is issued, but notification is still required.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1176\">Going westbound via Shanwick<\/h4>\n<ol>\n<li>Send your RCL or make a voice clearance request 90\u201330 mins before the OEP.<\/li>\n<li>You\u2019ll receive your Oceanic Clearance by ACARS or voice.<\/li>\n<li>Fly the Oceanic Clearance.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Also note that if entering Shanwick from another Oceanic area, no clearance is needed from Shanwick.<\/p>\n<p>We <em>think<\/em> we got all that right.
