{"id":25014,"date":"2024-04-02T04:40:46","date_gmt":"2024-04-02T08:40:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=25014"},"modified":"2024-04-02T04:40:46","modified_gmt":"2024-04-02T08:40:46","slug":"airport-fire-fighter-strike-in-australia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/airport-fire-fighter-strike-in-australia\/","title":{"rendered":"Airport Fire Fighter Strike in Australia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Disruption looms at Australian airports on <strong>April 15. <\/strong>Rescue fire fighters have announced a <strong>four-hour strike from<\/strong> <strong>06:00 \u2013 10:00 local time<\/strong>\u00a0at twenty-seven airports across the country \u2013 including the majors.<\/p>\n<p>It seems the cause extends beyond just pay and conditions with <strong>safety concerns<\/strong> <strong>over staffing levels<\/strong> the United Fire Fighters Union has <a href=\"https:\/\/simpleflying.com\/aussie-aviation-firefighters-holiday-chaos-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">described<\/a> as \u2018dire.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s everything we know, and how to decode the inevitable RFFS Notams soon to grace your pre-flight briefing.<\/p>\n<h4>Impact to Ops<\/h4>\n<p>The strike will see RFFS categories simultaneously reduce as low as zero (more on these categories below).<\/p>\n<p>While the exact impact of the impending strike isn\u2019t clear yet, previous strikes have given us a good idea of what to expect.<\/p>\n<p>Traffic delays could extend beyond the strike period as airlines scramble to re-schedule cancelled or delayed services, with the added addition of peak school holidays. For inbound traffic this means <strong>delays and holding.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The RFFS downgrades themselves will be <strong>announced by Notam<\/strong> closer to the time and may also affect the use of Australian airports as <strong>ETOPS alternates.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>\u2018Leaked\u2019 Controversy<\/h4>\n<p>The plot thickens over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2024\/apr\/02\/aviation-firefighters-strike-airports-risk-emergencies\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">alleged leaking<\/a> of a safety assessment which supposedly identified <strong>major flaws at several Australian airports<\/strong> over a lack of staff, procedures, trucks and other frontline fire-fighting equipment for the type of aircraft using them.<\/p>\n<p>If this is correct, YBBN\/Brisbane, YPPH\/Perth, YMML\/Melbourne, YSCB\/Canberra and YSSY\/Sydney airports are all operating at <strong>high\u00a0levels of risk in some emergency scenarios<\/strong> \u2013 something that Air Services Australia (who is responsible for RFFS staffing) has denied. However, if no deal is struck between the Fire Fighters\u2019 Union and Air Services Australia, we are likely to see more.<\/p>\n<p>The good news is that we all also receive <strong>advance notice<\/strong> of any that are planned.
