{"id":24696,"date":"2024-02-28T05:38:28","date_gmt":"2024-02-28T10:38:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=24696"},"modified":"2024-02-28T05:39:28","modified_gmt":"2024-02-28T10:39:28","slug":"delays-and-diversions-in-dubai","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/delays-and-diversions-in-dubai\/","title":{"rendered":"Delays and Diversions in Dubai"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An OPSGROUP member reported that on Feb 21, several long-haul carriers were <strong>forced to divert<\/strong> due to extended airborne delays.<\/p>\n<p>The problem stemmed from the following unassuming needle-in-a-haystack Notam&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24699 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Screen-Shot-2024-02-27-at-6.24.24-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"609\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Screen-Shot-2024-02-27-at-6.24.24-PM.png 609w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Screen-Shot-2024-02-27-at-6.24.24-PM-300x96.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 609px) 100vw, 609px\" \/>\u00a0<\/strong>It was later re-issued (after-the-fact), somewhat sheepishly with an actual holding advisory &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-24700 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Screen-Shot-2024-02-27-at-6.25.36-PM.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"802\" height=\"373\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Screen-Shot-2024-02-27-at-6.25.36-PM.png 802w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Screen-Shot-2024-02-27-at-6.25.36-PM-300x140.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Screen-Shot-2024-02-27-at-6.25.36-PM-768x357.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Screen-Shot-2024-02-27-at-6.25.36-PM-800x373.png 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 802px) 100vw, 802px\" \/>The good news is that you can easily access the referenced AIP SUP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gcaa.gov.ae\/en\/ais\/Pages\/default.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online<\/a> \u2013 provided you provide scans of your passport, your contact details, favourite colour, hobbies and the name of your first-born.<\/p>\n<p>OR<\/p>\n<p>You can just read the following summary of what\u2019s been going on.<\/p>\n<h4>The Trouble SUP<\/h4>\n<p>You can read it in full <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/eSUP-2023-35.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a> (but it\u2019s heavy).<\/p>\n<p>Basically, what you need to know is that there are <strong>ongoing taxiway works<\/strong> happening at the airport.<\/p>\n<p>These are divided into areas, and the one causing issues is \u2018C08\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>For Runway 30L, this is causing a bottle neck for aircraft exiting on the rapids bound for terminals 2 and 3.<\/p>\n<p>The preferred exit (K8) is partially blocked by the works, along with the next non-rapid exit (K7) which is completely closed.<\/p>\n<p>The next option is K6, which is further up the runway. The extra time needed to allow aircraft to vacate means<strong> increased spacing for arrivals.<\/strong> Word on the street is that frequent A380 ops are also compounding the problem.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what that looks like on a chart.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-24711\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Map.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"995\" height=\"811\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Map.png 995w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Map-300x245.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/Map-768x626.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 995px) 100vw, 995px\" \/>During peak times, arrivals are stacking up.<\/p>\n<p>Those times are daily between:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>00:00 \u2013 03:00z (04:00 \u2013 07:00 LT)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>07:00 \u2013 09:30z (11:00 \u2013 13:30 LT)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>13:30 \u2013 21:30z (17:30 \u2013 01:30 LT)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If Runway 30L is in use, and you are arriving during one of these periods \u2013 carry at least an <strong>extra 40 minutes<\/strong> of holding fuel.<\/p>\n<h4>How long will this last?<\/h4>\n<p>The current Notam says until March 9, but may get extended. The SUP doesn\u2019t provide an end date, and strangely the original Notam applied until April 6. In other words, your guess is as good as ours&#8230;<\/p>\n<h4>But wait, there\u2019s more.<\/h4>\n<p>There are some other Notams hidden in the pile that include<strong> closures of the other runway<\/strong> (12L\/30R) that infringe these times. That\u2019s an average of seventy-five arrivals and departures per hour using the one problem runway \u2013 <strong>40 minutes may still not be enough. <\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Please report back.<\/h4>\n<p>If you experience delays in Dubai related to works (or otherwise) we\u2019d love to hear from you so we can share that info with the group.
