Here\u2019s an update on what has changed.<\/p>\n<h4>Offset Approaches<\/h4>\n<p>On November 30, Runway 16R received two new approaches <strong>(offset by 3 degrees)<\/strong> \u2013 the RNAV (Y) and RNP (Z).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_24165\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-24165\" class=\"size-large wp-image-24165\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/KDEN-1024x464.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/KDEN-1024x464.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/KDEN-300x136.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/KDEN-768x348.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/KDEN-1536x696.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/KDEN-2048x928.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-24165\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The two new offset approaches to Runway 16R<\/p><\/div>\n<p>It was previously determined that 3-degrees would be enough to mitigate nuisance TCAS activations and allow operators to continue using full TA\/RA mode throughout their approach and landing.<\/p>\n<p>Along with these offset approaches, the FAA has published <strong>new procedures<\/strong> for their use found in this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/other_visit\/aviation_industry\/airline_operators\/airline_safety\/info\/all_infos\/InFO23010.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Information Note for Operators.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The procedures will be in use anytime Runways 16L and R are operating simultaneously, and<strong> visual approaches<\/strong> <strong>are in use on at least one of the runways.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>New Procedures<\/h4>\n<p>Listen out for the following phrase on the ATIS:<\/p>\n<p><em><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-24183 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Bubble-1024x451.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Bubble-1024x451.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Bubble-300x132.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Bubble-768x338.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Bubble-1536x677.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/Bubble.png 1630w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re landing on 16R, there are effectively now two scenarios:<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"background-color: #faf448;\">Instrument Approach<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 Follow the RNAV (Y) or RNP (Z) charted procedure. Easy.<\/p>\n<p><em>or<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"background-color: #faf448;\">Visual Approach<\/span><\/strong> \u2013 Here\u2019s where things get a little more complicated. Even though the FAA regs say that an aircraft on a visual approach does not need to follow a specific track or vertical profile, in the case of KDEN, the FAA <strong>strongly suggests <\/strong>you do.<\/p>\n<p>Aside from assuring you stay inside Class B airspace, it will also mitigate nuisance TCAS RA\u2019s that can lead to unstable approaches, go-arounds and level busts.<\/p>\n<p>In their Info Note the FAA goes even further and says<strong> don\u2019t fly a straight-in approach to 16R<\/strong> (including via the existing ILS) unless <strong>specifically cleared<\/strong> to do so.<\/p>\n<h4>So when can we line up with the runway?<\/h4>\n<p>Whether you are on an instrument approach, or a visual, the FAA says don\u2019t break off the offset until you can see the runway and have <strong>crossed the FAF.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Look out for these chart notes&#8230;<\/h4>\n<p>Because the above procedure will only be used when conditions permit a visual approach on at least one of the two parallel runways, technically the whole deal doesn\u2019t fall within the realm of <em>\u2018simultaneous IFR operations.\u2019<\/em><\/p>\n<p>So, you can disregard the following two chart notes:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-24181\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/crossed-1024x451.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"451\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/crossed-1024x451.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/crossed-300x132.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/crossed-768x338.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/crossed.png 1072w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>&#8230;although the last one is still recommended by the FAA.<\/p>\n<h4>Still have questions?<\/h4>\n<p>You can get in touch with the folk at the Flight Technologies and Procedures Division at <a href=\"mailto:9-AWA-AVS-AFS-400-Flight-Technologies-Procedures@faa.gov\">9-AWA-AVS-AFS-400-Flight-Technologies-Procedures@faa.gov<\/a> (yes, that\u2019s the real address) or on the phone via (202) 267- 8790.<\/p>\n<p>Or talk to us! <a href=\"mailto:team@ops.group\">team@ops.group<\/a>.
