{"id":23943,"date":"2023-11-14T14:17:31","date_gmt":"2023-11-14T19:17:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=23943"},"modified":"2023-11-17T05:21:18","modified_gmt":"2023-11-17T10:21:18","slug":"north-atlantic-volcanic-threat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/north-atlantic-volcanic-threat\/","title":{"rendered":"North Atlantic Volcanic Threat"},"content":{"rendered":"<h6><strong>Key Points<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>One of Iceland&#8217;s volcanoes (10nm southwest of BIKF\/Keflavik) is showing signs it\u2019s about to erupt.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>If it does, NAT crossing traffic is likely to be affected at short notice.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>ICAO have a Contingency Plan ready to go if it does erupt (PDF below). <\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Pilots and Operators: There is a list of things to watch out for if you do fly through volcanic ash, and a recommended procedure to follow.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Iceland is on high alert for an imminent eruption at one of the volcanoes on the Reykjanes Peninsula \u2013 a stone\u2019s throw southwest of Keflavik. But it\u2019s credible enough for Iceland to declare a <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2023\/11\/11\/europe\/iceland-emergency-evacuates-threat-volcanic-eruption-intl-hnk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">state of emergency<\/a>. Recent earthquakes in the area are an ominous sign. If it does erupt, there are several possible scenarios that could affect air traffic.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><span style=\"background-color: #faf448;\">BIKF\/Keflavik may close.<\/span><\/strong> Unlike previous eruptions, this one is just 10nm away from the airport and a little further from the Icelandic capital, Reykjavik. Aside from being a major airport in its own right, BIKF is a commonly used ETOPS\/EDTO alternate for traffic crossing the NAT.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"background-color: #faf448;\">Part of the NAT HLA may become unusable depending on the spread of ash.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0More southerly routes than usual may become a requirement which means extended flight times and more fuel.<\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"background-color: #faf448;\">Major airspace closures could occur for an extended period of time.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0 The European mainland may once again be in the firing line, thanks to the mid-latitude westerlies.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Yeah but what ACTUALLY happens?<\/h4>\n<p>If the volcano warning goes to code <span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><strong><span style=\"background-color: #fa0a0a;\">RED<\/span><\/strong><\/span> (it&#8217;s currently code <span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><strong><span style=\"background-color: #fa9a0a;\">ORANGE<\/span><\/strong><\/span>), that basically means an eruption has started. In this case, <strong>the airspace within a 120nm radius will close<\/strong>, until they confirm there&#8217;s no ash cloud. Don&#8217;t do it. Here&#8217;s a list of nightmarish things that will probably happen if you do:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong><span style=\"background-color: #faf448;\">Smoke, fumes or dust may appear in the cockpit. Get those masks on.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"background-color: #faf448;\">Engine malfunctions, stalls, over-temperature, thrust loss, engine failure. <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"background-color: #faf448;\">Reduced visibility due to the abrasive effects of ash on windshields and landing lights. <\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><span style=\"background-color: #faf448;\">Pitot tubes may become blocked, so airspeed indications may become unreliable.<\/span><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><em>Advice: disconnect the autopilot, set engine thrust to an appropriate value and maintain the aircraft\u2019s pitch attitude manually. This will keep the aircraft at a safe speed, but will probably result in difficulty to maintain the assigned altitude.
