{"id":23816,"date":"2023-11-08T00:01:47","date_gmt":"2023-11-08T05:01:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=23816"},"modified":"2023-11-08T06:02:24","modified_gmt":"2023-11-08T11:02:24","slug":"new-airspace-warning-the-red-sea","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/new-airspace-warning-the-red-sea\/","title":{"rendered":"New Airspace Warning: The Red Sea"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With the Israel-Gaza conflict ongoing, a lot of traffic is re-routing well clear of the LLLL\/Tel Aviv FIR via parts of the <strong>Sinai Peninsula<\/strong>, the <strong>Red Sea<\/strong> and into Saudi Arabia via the <strong>Gulf of Aqaba.<\/strong> Especially those flights bound for Amman, Jordan.<\/p>\n<p>The problem is that spill-over risks from the conflict are now extending beyond the boundaries of Israeli airspace and into this <strong>busy corridor.<\/strong> We\u2019ve reported a number of these instances in the past few weeks.<\/p>\n<p>On Nov 1, the UK CAA published a <a href=\"https:\/\/safeairspace.net\/egypt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new airspace warning <\/a>via Notam:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-23879\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screen-Shot-2023-11-08-at-4.15.07-PM-1024x215.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"215\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screen-Shot-2023-11-08-at-4.15.07-PM-1024x215.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screen-Shot-2023-11-08-at-4.15.07-PM-300x63.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screen-Shot-2023-11-08-at-4.15.07-PM-768x161.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screen-Shot-2023-11-08-at-4.15.07-PM-1536x322.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Screen-Shot-2023-11-08-at-4.15.07-PM.png 1848w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/>Airspace warnings aren\u2019t new for the <a href=\"https:\/\/safeairspace.net\/egypt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sinai Peninsula<\/a> &#8211; but are for the Red Sea and Gulf of Aqaba. So, what has made the UK issue this one now?<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_23882\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-23882\" class=\"wp-image-23882 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Map-4-1024x608.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"608\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Map-4-1024x608.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Map-4-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Map-4-768x456.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Map-4-1536x912.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Map-4-2048x1216.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-23882\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The UK&#8217;s new airspace warning lies within or close to busy routes being flown by major carriers.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h4>Recent Events<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Oct 27 \u2013<\/strong> a weaponised drone <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/middle-east\/explosion-heard-egyptian-red-sea-town-near-israeli-border-witness-2023-10-27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">struck a town<\/a> near Egypt\u2019s border with Israel near Taba. This was likely launched by Yemen\u2019s Houthi group from Yemen, or the Red Sea itself.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oct 24 &#8211;<\/strong> Several OPSGROUP members reported GPS spoofing events resulting in the aircraft showing its position over Tel Aviv, Israel. Several hotspots were identified, including over the Sinai Peninsula and Red Sea. You can read more about those <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/gps-spoofing-update-08nov2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Oct 19 \u2013<\/strong> At least one cruise missile or drone was <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/International\/security-incident-involving-us-navy-destroyer-red-sea\/story?id=104147141\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shot down<\/a> by a US Naval vessel over the Red Sea, reportedly launched from militants in Yemen and targeting Israel.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-23877 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Map-3-1024x593.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"593\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Map-3-1024x593.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Map-3-300x174.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Map-3-768x445.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Map-3-1536x889.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Map-3-2048x1185.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While militant activity on the Sinai Peninsula and adjacent regions is a <strong>known threat<\/strong>, the conflict in Israel has <strong>changed the risk picture<\/strong>. These groups have suddenly become more active and their attacks more sporadic. This may not be evident in existing airspace warnings issued by Germany and the US FAA &#8211; the latter having been around for years.<\/p>\n<h4>Is it safe enough to overfly?<\/h4>\n<p>There is no definitive answer to this question \u2013 as the UK Notam above alludes to, potential risks need to be taken into account and the appetite for those will vary from operator-to-operator.<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s what we do know though:<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"background-color: #fffd08;\">It is better to fly higher.<\/span><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0All <a href=\"https:\/\/safeairspace.net\/egypt\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">existing warnings<\/a> for the Sinai Peninsula (and now adjacent regions including the Red Sea) advise operators to <strong>stay above FL250\/260.<\/strong> This is likely due to the risk of militant groups with access to anti-aircraft weaponry such as man portable air defence systems (MANPADS).<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"background-color: #fffd08;\">The chance of misidentification by the military is low, but not zero.<\/span><\/strong><\/em> Military vessels active in the Red Sea are equipped with sophisticated and long-range air defence systems capable of reaching all levels. It is extremely unlikely that a civil aircraft would be misidentified \u2013 but history has shown that accidents can happen.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"background-color: #fffd08;\">Know what to do if you are spoofed.<\/span><\/strong>\u00a0<\/em>As opposed to GPS jamming, spoofing is insidious and potentially confusing. Your aircraft may not even alert you that something has gone wrong. <strong>We have a Briefing, Guide and Map on GPS spoofing which you can access <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/gps-spoofing-update-08nov2023\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/strong> In the worst cases, the impact has been severe: complete loss of on-board nav requiring ATC vectors, IRS failure, and unnoticed off-track navigation towards danger areas and hostile airspace.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong><span style=\"background-color: #fffd08;\">Think about diversions.<\/span><\/strong><\/em>\u00a0If you need to land in a hurry (especially in Sinai), you are exposing yourself to increased risk of anti-aircraft fire, small arms fire and mortar attacks by groups with a known intent to attack civilian interests, possibly motivated by current events.<\/p>\n<h4>Alternative Routes?<\/h4>\n<p>Flight tracking shows major airlines are still overflying Southern Sinai and the Red Sea. The only option to avoid the region completely involves a long diversion south.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for those bound for <strong>Jordan<\/strong> and perhaps <strong>Kuwait<\/strong>, this means extended flight times.
