{"id":22867,"date":"2023-07-20T11:04:16","date_gmt":"2023-07-20T15:04:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=22867"},"modified":"2023-07-21T22:09:32","modified_gmt":"2023-07-22T02:09:32","slug":"contaminated-jet-fuel-in-nigeria","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/contaminated-jet-fuel-in-nigeria\/","title":{"rendered":"Contaminated Jet Fuel In Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week, a fleet of jet aircraft were grounded in Nigeria after <strong>significant volumes of water were found in their fuel tanks.<\/strong> One became airborne and suffered malfunctions in flight.<\/p>\n<p>The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) confirmed the issue was <strong>not confined to that one airline<\/strong>, describing the situation as &#8216;dire.&#8217; Anyone uplifting fuel there right now should be seriously concerned.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22889\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22889\" class=\"wp-image-22889 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/maxair2-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/maxair2-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/maxair2-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/maxair2-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/maxair2-900x600.jpg 900w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/maxair2.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-22889\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Max Air identified Octavus Petroleum as the source of the contaminated fuel which led to the grounding of its 737 fleet.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The NCAA has issued an urgent <a href=\"https:\/\/ncaa.gov.ng\/media\/4dgo3udz\/aol-085.pdf\">All Operators Letter<\/a> to refuelers and operators to follow the proper procedures \u2013 but with <strong>sixty days<\/strong> to comply. That\u2019s over two months of potentially <strong>contaminated fuel<\/strong> still being used at airports in Lagos, Abuja, and Kano \u2013 without mandatory procedures in place to check it.<\/p>\n<h4>What do pilots have to do?<\/h4>\n<p>The NCAA note requires a thorough inspection of refuelling equipment, and testing of the fuel it carries or pumps. More notably, there will also be a <strong>mandatory requirement<\/strong> <strong>to take samples<\/strong> from fuel tanks before and after refuelling too. <strong>This will apply to anyone operating an aircraft in Nigeria.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22870\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22870\" class=\"size-large wp-image-22870\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Jet-fuel-sampling-1024x576.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Jet-fuel-sampling-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Jet-fuel-sampling-300x169.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Jet-fuel-sampling-768x432.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Jet-fuel-sampling-1536x864.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Jet-fuel-sampling-2048x1152.jpeg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-22870\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">It is becoming mandatory to test fuel samples both before and after refuelling.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The advice is sound though \u2013 be <strong>hyper vigilant<\/strong> of anything going into your tanks there at the moment. Of course, perhaps the best mitigator right now is <strong>not to refuel at all<\/strong>, and to <strong>tanker instead.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Where is the water coming from?<\/h4>\n<p>Problems with infrastructure and how it is stored is likely to blame. Aside from particulates and fuel-loving microbes, there are <strong>multiple opportunities<\/strong> for water to accumulate. This can include water that gathers in low spots within pipelines, rain-water contamination, changes in temperature during storage or while being pumped and even the moisture content of air when tanks are unsealed to add or remove fuel.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22871\" style=\"width: 670px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22871\" class=\"size-large wp-image-22871\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/111129-F-OC707-013-660x1024.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/111129-F-OC707-013-660x1024.jpeg 660w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/111129-F-OC707-013-193x300.jpeg 193w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/111129-F-OC707-013-768x1192.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/111129-F-OC707-013-990x1536.jpeg 990w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/111129-F-OC707-013.jpeg 1289w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-22871\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There are plenty of opportunities for water to contaminate jet fuel in storage and transfer, especially if proper procedures aren&#8217;t followed.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>A Little Vs A Lot<\/h4>\n<p>If you suspect contamination while airborne you should <strong>land immediately.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The impact depends on how much water is actually in your tanks. In small amounts, it can rust and corrode important components of your fuel system including fuel nozzles that can eventually fail. Water can also wear out fuel pumps that rely on fuel to stay slippery and cool.<\/p>\n<p>You may also notice <strong>unusual engine operating temperatures, surging, and technical faults<\/strong> with your aircraft\u2019s fuel system.<\/p>\n<p>In larger quantities the issues become critical. Icing can restrict or stop the flow of fuel to your engines leading to <strong>flame outs<\/strong> (remember water freezes at just 0 degrees C, while pure Jet A1 can remain liquid in temps as low as -47 degrees C).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_22872\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22872\" class=\"size-full wp-image-22872\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ice-trent-800-heat-exchanger_copy.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ice-trent-800-heat-exchanger_copy.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ice-trent-800-heat-exchanger_copy-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/ice-trent-800-heat-exchanger_copy-768x575.jpeg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-22872\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Icing can clog filters and prevent fuel from reaching your engines.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Also, water doesn\u2019t burn, so if it reaches your combustion chambers in any significant quantities you can say sayonara to your engines producing thrust \u2013 in other words you could have a <strong>multiple engine failure<\/strong> on your hands.<\/p>\n<h4>Make Sure You Report<\/h4>\n<p>If you do detect fuel contamination in Nigeria, it must be <strong>reported<\/strong> <strong>to the NCAA.<\/strong> Their contact details are found in the above letter.<\/p>\n<p>And make sure you let us know too so we can help spread the word, and keep everyone safe.
