{"id":21806,"date":"2023-03-28T16:12:58","date_gmt":"2023-03-28T20:12:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=21806"},"modified":"2023-03-28T18:38:59","modified_gmt":"2023-03-28T22:38:59","slug":"uk-air-passenger-duty-rate-hike","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/uk-air-passenger-duty-rate-hike\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Air Passenger Duty Rate Hike"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The UK Air Passenger Duty Rates are increasing!<\/p>\n<h4>What:<\/h4>\n<p>Air Passenger Duty rates &#8211; a charge for each passenger on flights originating in the UK.<\/p>\n<h4>Who:<\/h4>\n<p>It applies to<strong> fixed wing aircraft weighing 5,700 kg or more<\/strong> (12,500 lbs) and only applies to passengers you have onboard, not your crew. It applies to private non-revenue and charter flights too.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are some exemptions:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Emergency, training, military, humanitarian, search-and-rescue and air ambulance flights<\/li>\n<li>Cargo flights<\/li>\n<li>Transit passengers possibly<\/li>\n<li>Tech stops so long as no-one gets on or off<\/li>\n<li>Not really an exemption, but if a passenger has an onward connecting flight it only looks a the first leg when deciding what to charge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There is also an\u00a0<em>&#8216;opposite exemption&#8217;\u00a0<\/em>which applies to\u00a0passengers on flights using aircraft of 20,001 kg (44,094 lbs) or more with fewer than 19 seats. For this they <strong>apply a premium rate<\/strong> which is in fact about double the standard business\/first class rate.<\/p>\n<h4>When:<\/h4>\n<p>The new rates come in from <strong>April 1, 2023<\/strong>, and will be applied for the tax year 2023-2024. (So if you&#8217;re reading this post after March 31, 2024 then this probably won&#8217;t be accurate anymore.)<\/p>\n<h4>Where:<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Everywhere in the UK.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They are based off where the journey ends outside of the UK. <em>&#8220;This is their\u00a0final destination&#8221;<\/em>as HMRC state quite dramatically on their website.<\/p>\n<h4>How:<\/h4>\n<p>They are introducing new bands &#8211; specifically,<strong> a new domestic band and a new ultra long-haul band. <\/strong>Current rates will also increase.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The new <strong>domestic rate will be set at \u00a36.50 <\/strong>(that&#8217;s actually been reduced from \u00a313)<\/li>\n<li>The new <strong>Ultra long-haul rate will start at \u00a391<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>From April 1 there will be <strong>4 (instead of the current 2) bands<\/strong> &#8211; Domestic, A, B and C.<\/p>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21807 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-24-at-11.04.53.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"524\" height=\"204\" data-wp-editing=\"1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-24-at-11.04.53.png 524w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-24-at-11.04.53-300x117.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 524px) 100vw, 524px\" \/><\/h4>\n<p>Of course, it is the UK so never just that simple. There are also<strong> 3 types of rate, based off seat pitch:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Reduced:\u00a0<\/strong>seat pitch less than 40&#8243; (1.016m)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Standard:\u00a0<\/strong>seat pitch more than 40&#8243;<\/li>\n<li><strong>Higher (the premium rate we mentioned earlier):\u00a0<\/strong>airplane weighs 20 tonnes or more but has 19 or less seats.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/guidance\/rates-and-allowances-for-air-passenger-duty#rate-bands\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">If you go to this page<\/a> you can see all the destinations and which band they fit into, as well as a lot of info on how to calculate your seat pitch and the rate you need to pay.<\/p>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-21808 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-24-at-11.14.11.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"609\" height=\"322\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-24-at-11.14.11.png 609w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Screenshot-2023-03-24-at-11.14.11-300x159.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 609px) 100vw, 609px\" \/><\/h4>\n<p>So the new ultra long-haul rate is the one that will really sting.
