{"id":21611,"date":"2023-03-15T08:54:05","date_gmt":"2023-03-15T12:54:05","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=21611"},"modified":"2023-03-15T09:04:12","modified_gmt":"2023-03-15T13:04:12","slug":"ops-in-indonesia-is-it-safe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/ops-in-indonesia-is-it-safe\/","title":{"rendered":"Ops in Indonesia: Is it safe?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We last took a closer look at Indonesia <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/aviation-in-indonesia-how-safe-is-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">back in 2021<\/a> and said\u00a0<i>&#8220;It&#8217;s fine at the big airports, but watch out on the ground at the smaller ones.&#8221;<\/i><\/p>\n<p>Nearly two years on and we thought it might be a good time to take another look and see if the situation has changed&#8230;<\/p>\n<h4>What&#8217;s happened in two years?<\/h4>\n<p>The security situation in the Papua region of Indonesia has worsened, with numerous reports of ground incidents at smaller, rural airports in the area.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>11 March 2023:\u00a0<\/strong>An armed group targeted a passenger airport operating at WAVD\/<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dekai<\/span>\u00a0airport, wounding one passenger as it took off. Several operators have suspended operations to this airport since then.<\/li>\n<li><strong>8 March 2023:<\/strong> An armed group opened fired at WAYB\/Bilorai airport. One plane on the ground was hit and another diverted.<\/li>\n<li><strong>March 2023:\u00a0<\/strong>A landing aircraft at WAJO\/Oksibil was shot at, a cargo aircraft was set alight on the ground in a separate incident.<\/li>\n<li><strong>February 2023:<\/strong> A foreign pilot flying for Susi Air was kidnapped.<\/li>\n<li><strong>June 2022:<\/strong> An armed group shot at an aircraft as it landed into Kenyam Airport.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>On top of these security incidents we have heard of protests over fuel shortages and many, many volcano issues.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-21679\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Indonesia-Papua-v4-1024x599.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"599\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Indonesia-Papua-v4-1024x599.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Indonesia-Papua-v4-300x175.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Indonesia-Papua-v4-768x449.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Indonesia-Papua-v4-1536x898.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/Indonesia-Papua-v4.jpg 2000w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>What are the official warnings?<\/h4>\n<p><strong>IFALPA<\/strong> issued a<a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/23sab02-security-concerns-in-the-papua-region-of-indonesia-1.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> security alert for commercial operations<\/a> in the Papua region in March 2023.
