{"id":21070,"date":"2023-01-24T06:42:40","date_gmt":"2023-01-24T11:42:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=21070"},"modified":"2023-01-24T06:42:40","modified_gmt":"2023-01-24T11:42:40","slug":"super-bowl-2023-special-procedures-in-phoenix","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/super-bowl-2023-special-procedures-in-phoenix\/","title":{"rendered":"Super Bowl 2023: Special Procedures in Phoenix"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s time to stock up on chicken wings \u2013 Super Bowl LVII is just around the corner.<\/p>\n<p>This year, kick-off will be in <strong>Glendale, Arizona on February 12.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Airports within the area will be <strong>extremely busy<\/strong> \u2013 not just in Arizona, but across the state line in Nevada too.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA are onto it, and have published their safety plan for the event. If you\u2019re flying into (or near) the game, here\u2019s what you need to know.<\/p>\n<h4>Parking<\/h4>\n<p><strong>A<\/strong> <strong>ramp reservation program<\/strong> is already open (including for drop-and-goes) for airports in the Phoenix area from <strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Feb 8 \u2013 14<\/span>,<\/strong> along with those in Las Vegas. Essentially, you have to <strong>reserve a parking spot<\/strong> in advance during this period.<\/p>\n<p>This includes the following airports:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arizona<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>KPHX\/Phoenix Sky Harbor<\/li>\n<li>KSDL\/Scottsdale<\/li>\n<li>KDVT\/Phoenix Deer Valley<\/li>\n<li>KGEU\/Glendale<\/li>\n<li>KGYR\/Goodyear<\/li>\n<li>KCHD\/Chandler<\/li>\n<li>KFFZ\/Falcon Field<\/li>\n<li>KIWA\/Williams Gateway<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Nevada<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>KLAS\/Las Vegas<\/li>\n<li>KVGT\/North Las Vegas<\/li>\n<li>KHND\/Henderson<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Who to talk to for your reservation<\/h4>\n<p>Talk to your <strong>FBO<\/strong> (sooner rather than later). They are the ones with the slot allocations and will be able to keep you updated on any changes nearer the time. No FBO? To help keep things flowin\u2019, ATC will implement the usual culprits including ground delay programs, holding, reroutes, miles-in-trail and other restrictions.<\/p>\n<p>Your best defence will be to avoid arriving and departing at <strong>peak periods.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These are expected to be between: <em><strong>07:00am to 19:00pm local (14 \u2013 00z) daily between Feb 8 \u2013 13.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A head\u2019s up that it can also be extremely busy for departures on game day well into the wee small hours of the morning too. Last year over one hundred and fifty jets had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.indy100.com\/news\/map-private-jets-super-bowl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">already left<\/a> the LA Basin area within five hours of the game ending.<\/p>\n<p>Also beware that ATC will not allow aircraft to pick up IFR clearances airborne, or change destinations within 200nm of Phoenix Terminal airspace.<\/p>\n<h4>Security<\/h4>\n<p>Two <strong>TFRs<\/strong> will be established on February 12, centred around State Farm Stadium in Glendale, approx. 7nm northwest of downtown Phoenix.<\/p>\n<p>Those details will be published via the <strong>FDC Notams,<\/strong> usually 3-5 days before kick-off. But you can expect standard stuff \u2013 a very restrictive 10nm inner ring, and a less restrictive one out to 30nm.<\/p>\n<p>There should be minor impact for IFR aircraft but expect additional communication requirements and discrete transponder operations.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_21111\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21111\" class=\"wp-image-21111 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/TFR-rings-1024x634.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"634\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/TFR-rings-1024x634.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/TFR-rings-300x186.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/TFR-rings-768x475.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/TFR-rings-1536x951.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/TFR-rings.jpg 1764w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-21111\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">You can expect two TFR rings centered around State Farm Stadium &#8211; don&#8217;t use this to navigate though, the real deal won&#8217;t be published by the FAA until a few days prior.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Getting in and out<\/h4>\n<p>There are <strong>preferred routes<\/strong> for all IFR turbojet aircraft arriving and departing the Phoenix area from <strong>17z Feb 10 until 23z Feb 12.<\/strong> You can view those <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/media\/19731\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA has also summarised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/superbowl#air-files\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tower hours <\/a>for major airports near the event, many of which will be extended.<\/p>\n<p>For real time info on delays, airport status and other flow related issues, the <a href=\"https:\/\/nasstatus.faa.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAA NASS website<\/a> is the place to check.<\/p>\n<h4>Other stuff to think about<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Consider your alternates.<\/strong> Options are going to be limited and restricted because of the high traffic levels. Unless you have a bona fide emergency, you\u2019ll need to plan ahead.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Gas Up. <\/strong>With all the traffic management programs in place, there could be <strong>lengthy delays<\/strong>. Consider extra holding and taxi fuel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Check your documents. <\/strong>Make sure you have everything you need onboard, including crew licences, medicals, aircraft docs and confirmation of all reservations and confirmations. Increased security measures may involve ramp checks, searches, or other TSA requirements.<\/p>\n<h4>One last thing&#8230;..chicken.<\/h4>\n<p>It&#8217;s just not Super Bowl weekend without <strong>wings<\/strong>.
