{"id":20310,"date":"2022-11-14T08:16:24","date_gmt":"2022-11-14T13:16:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=20310"},"modified":"2022-11-16T06:12:28","modified_gmt":"2022-11-16T11:12:28","slug":"jeppesen-ransomware-attack-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/jeppesen-ransomware-attack-update\/","title":{"rendered":"Jeppesen Ransomware Attack Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On November 3rd a ransomware attack took down the majority of <strong>Jeppesen planning products.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We heard that:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/Jetplan.com\"><strong>Jetplan.com<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0was down<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/Milplanner.com\"><strong>Milplanner.com<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0was down<\/li>\n<li><strong>Jetplanner<\/strong> (standalone) was not working<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chart viewer<\/strong> products was not working (eg. <a href=\"https:\/\/elinkportal.jeppesen.com\/\">Elink portal<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/jeppesen.com\/icharts\/login.jsp?login=wrong\">Icharts<\/a>)<\/li>\n<li><strong>FliteDeck Pro<\/strong>\u00a0was not working<\/li>\n<li><strong>Foreflight<\/strong> (now a Boeing company) was working but their Notam feed was not.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Find the <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/jetplanner-fd-pro-charts-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">post on this here.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Update: November 16<\/h4>\n<p>We asked around and it sounds like it took longer to fix than expected, and some bits still aren&#8217;t working quite as they were:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Foreflight notams\u00a0<\/strong>remained down for several days<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ice crystal areas\u00a0<\/strong>are not showing<\/li>\n<li>There is an ongoing issue with\u00a0<strong>expired charts and updates being unavailable<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Jeppesen has advised that\u00a0<em>\u201cThe most recent Jeppesen chart downloads are currently effective and in compliance. Any \u201cexpired\u201d messages prior to Dec 1 do not indicate that the charts are expired from a regulatory perspective.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>However, they do also have this note up. The most disruptive seemingly for those reliant on the planning software.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Let us know if you were impacted (or still are).<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>What can you do if this happens again?<\/h4>\n<p>We aren&#8217;t sure actually. It raised more questions for us than we have answers for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Can you use old route plans?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Can you use old fuel plans?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Where else can you get weather, Notam and planning info from?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Are there any back-ups for charts?<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>What else haven&#8217;t we thought of?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>We&#8217;ve asked the question to members who were impacted by this.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you were, and have some feedback on what the impact was and what you did about it, then send us the info at <a href=\"mailto:team@ops.group\">team@ops.group<\/a>\u00a0We will keep it anonymous, but if you have anything that can help others plan for\/mitigate disruption if it occurs again in the future, then we want to hear it.<\/p>\n<h4>Has this happened before?<\/h4>\n<p>Computer and software glitches have caused numerous issues in the past, but most of these have been <strong>related to passenger booking info.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A problem with <strong>Aerodata<\/strong>, which several major US airlines use for weight and balance, caused disruption in 2019.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colonial_Pipeline_ransomware_attack\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In 2021<\/a>, a <strong>cyber attack on a major fuel pipeline<\/strong> in the USA led to significant disruption at east coast airports due to fuel supply issues.<\/p>\n<h4>The cyber security threat.<\/h4>\n<p>You&#8217;ve probably had to sit through a Cyber Security training thing at your organisation. They are basically common sense: don&#8217;t open random links and don&#8217;t give out passwords (or information that helps people guess passwords).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cyber criminal cunningness<\/strong> is increasing though. <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/please-be-wary-of-malicious-phish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We wrote about some of it here,<\/a> and it is worth upping the caution levels and making sure you ain&#8217;t a weak link in security.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On November 3rd a ransomware attack took down the majority of Jeppesen planning products.
