{"id":20049,"date":"2022-10-10T09:44:16","date_gmt":"2022-10-10T13:44:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=20049"},"modified":"2022-10-17T08:30:50","modified_gmt":"2022-10-17T12:30:50","slug":"what-we-know-about-the-us-cpdlc-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/what-we-know-about-the-us-cpdlc-trial\/","title":{"rendered":"What we know about the US CPDLC trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>There is a CPDLC trial running in the US, but it isn&#8217;t open for everyone&#8230;<\/p>\n<h4>General CPDLC stuff<\/h4>\n<p>CPDLC is basically a sort of &#8216;text messaging&#8217; system that lets ATC contact you, and you contact them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Combine it with ADS-C and you&#8217;ve got Datalink<\/strong>, which is mandated in a bunch of places like the<a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/data-link-mandate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> NAT HLA<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/cpdlc-in-europe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> Europe<\/a> and the UK above FL290 etc.<\/p>\n<p>Some other useful info:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Europe have a<a href=\"https:\/\/ext.eurocontrol.int\/WikiLink\/index.php\/Logon_List\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> logon list.<\/a> If you want an answer then register.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Europe use ATN<\/strong>, everywhere else uses FANS. If you only have FANS then you can still call yourself &#8216;CPDLC in Europe&#8217; if your original<strong> certificate of registration is pre 2018.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Just to be clear, the <strong>US requires FANS 1\/A.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>If your airplane is younger than 2014 then the system also needs a<strong> message recording function.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>PBCS tracks<\/strong> need a performance standard of RCP240 (ADS-C is RSP180).<\/li>\n<li><strong>AO56<\/strong> is the LOA to get (or maybe A003).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We actually made\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/A-Little-Opsicle-on-CPDLC.pdf\">A little Opsicle on CPDLC<\/a> just the other day. It isn&#8217;t really mandatory yet though. At least not the <b>domestic en-route CPDLC.\u00a0<\/b>This is the bit they are running a trial for, and they&#8217;re doing it with <strong>L3Harris.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The\u00a0trial is actually, specifically, for the business and general aviation community.\u00a0<\/strong>The likes of Boeing and Airbus (or rather their avionics configurations) have already been approved.<\/p>\n<p>So, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/air_traffic\/publications\/domesticnotices\/dom21001_gen.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here is the FAA info<\/a> on it. If your aircraft type is missing from the Trial List (shown below), this means that operational acceptability hasn\u2019t been determined yet for that specific aircraft type.
