Aviation Grid Network? Active Galactic Nucleus? Angry Goat Notams?<\/p>\n<p>Well, unless you\u2019re a Canadian operator, operate a regular scheduled service there, or work in the tiny room in the corner of the basement in Transport Canada&#8217;s Ellesmere Island Office where this was invented then you possibly won&#8217;t know.<\/p>\n<p>But if you operate <em>at all\u00a0<\/em>into Canada then you\u00a0<em>probably-might not-but maybe should-know\u00a0<\/em>what it is. It is the <strong>Aircraft Group Number<\/strong>, and because someone asked us about it and we didn\u2019t have a clue, we figured some of you may not either.<\/p>\n<h5><i>Disclaimer: We have no idea if there is a Transport Canada office on Ellesmere Island, we made that up. We just found it really, really hard to find anyone at Transport Canada who seemed to know anything about it until we emailed a really important person whose name was on one of the advisory\u00a0circulars. They were really\u00a0helpful.<\/i><\/h5>\n<h4><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19176 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Blank-2000-x-2000-89-1024x680.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Blank-2000-x-2000-89-1024x680.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Blank-2000-x-2000-89-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Blank-2000-x-2000-89-768x510.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Blank-2000-x-2000-89-1536x1019.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Blank-2000-x-2000-89.png 1986w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/h4>\n<h4>The Aircraft Group Number.<\/h4>\n<p><strong>Anyway, so the AGN is basically the \u00a0Canadian\u00a0equivalent of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.faa.gov\/documentLibrary\/media\/Advisory_Circular\/150-5300-13A-chg1-interactive-201705.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> FAA&#8217;s ADG stuff<\/a> for aircraft\u00a0classification and airport design (we think).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It is published for Canadian airports, and the\u00a0whole point is to <strong>provide information on stuff like runway or taxiway width, length and other physical characteristics<\/strong>, and also things like <strong>separation from obstacles in the runway environment. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Basically, a lot of important stuff you need to know if you want to operate there. <strong>It is measured based on the &#8216;most critical&#8217; aircraft operating in.\u00a0<\/strong>They measure, consider\u00a0and then the relevant AGN plops out the other end and is assigned.<\/p>\n<p>Any given aircraft might actually end up with more than one AGN depending on the airfield element being looked at.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>So it <em>\u2018aligns the certification standards to the actual (or planned) operation at the site by linking the standards to specific aircraft characteristics, aerodrome operating visibility conditions, and level of service.\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<li>In other words, it provides a simple<em> &#8220;method for interrelating the numerous technical specifications concerning the aerodrome and the characteristics of the critical aircraft.&#8221;<\/em><\/li>\n<li>In <em> other\u00a0<\/em>other words, it checks what can safely get in and out, and then<strong>\u00a0anyone wanting to go there can see if its suitable for their aircraft type (and its AGN).<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/tc.canada.ca\/en\/aviation\/reference-centre\/advisory-circulars\/advisory-circular-ac-no-302-019\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here&#8217;s the Advisory Circular on it<\/a> if you want a read.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19180\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19180\" class=\"wp-image-19180 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-13-at-15.08.56-1024x759.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"759\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-13-at-15.08.56-1024x759.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-13-at-15.08.56-300x222.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-13-at-15.08.56-768x569.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-13-at-15.08.56-1536x1139.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-13-at-15.08.56.png 1632w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Apparently this is how you work it out.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>So why are we telling you about it?<\/h4>\n<p>It is actually something you are probably familiar with even if you didn&#8217;t know the acronym, and when you&#8217;re thinking about heading to an airport you (hopefully) check stuff like this anyway.<\/p>\n<p>But, what we aren&#8217;t sure about is whether it is <strong>a guidance thing or a restriction thing?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_19182\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-19182\" class=\"wp-image-19182 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-13-at-15.20.47-1024x645.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"645\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-13-at-15.20.47-1024x645.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-13-at-15.20.47-300x189.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-13-at-15.20.47-768x483.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-13-at-15.20.47-1536x967.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/07\/Screenshot-2022-07-13-at-15.20.47.png 1706w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-19182\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There it is for RWY CERT.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>The original question<\/h4>\n<p>The question which sent us spiralling into an endless pit of Advisory Circulars and uncertainty came from<strong> a non-canadian BizAv operator<\/strong>\u00a0(you know who you are, and thanks for that!).<\/p>\n<p><strong>They did have a valid question though.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They wondered if they could still plan and airport for things like tech stops and medical emergencies if it&#8217;s a category below the aircraft AGN (but is perfectly landable at)? <strong>Because your AGN varies for different elements&#8230;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So we read through the bundle of ACs and frankly still didn\u2019t have a clue. So we started emailing everyone at Transport Canada\u00a0and finally got a nice response from someone pretty important and knowledgable.<\/p>\n<h4>The answer.<\/h4>\n<p>Well\u2026<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s start in <a href=\"https:\/\/tc.canada.ca\/en\/aviation\/reference-centre\/advisory-circulars\/advisory-circular-ac-no-602-005\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Advisory Circular 602-005 (effective 2021-06-04)<\/a>, the subject of which is <em>\u2018Publication Enhancements to Airport Information in the Aeronautical Publications.\u2019<\/em> Don\u2019t be put off by the title, this is <i>all about <\/i>the AGN.<\/p>\n<p>First up we get to the background and its in Section 3.0 that we discover this very important statement straight out of the <strong>Canadian Aviation Regulations &#8211;<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><i>\u201cBefore taking off from, landing at or otherwise operating an aircraft at an aerodrome, the pilot-in-command of the aircraft shall be satisfied that<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>(a) there is no likelihood of collision with another aircraft or a vehicle; and<\/i><\/p>\n<p><b><i>(b) the aerodrome is suitable for the intended operation.\u201d<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p>So, the AGN helps determine this.<\/p>\n<h4>But then there is this&#8230;<\/h4>\n<p>If an air operator is conducting <b>scheduled passenger services at the airport then they are bound by Part VII regulations in respect to the AGN limitations and any other limitation related to the airports\u2019 certification\u2026<\/b><\/p>\n<h4>So we still weren\u2019t entirely sure\u2026<\/h4>\n<p>A non-scheduled flight (so a lot of BizAv sorts) doesn\u2019t fall under that particular regulation,<strong> but the AGN is considered a limitation and part of an airport\u2019s certification.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Given it is telling us whether (very simply) our aircraft will fit (ok, whether obstacle clearance, runway width, etc etc is suitable), then it doesn\u2019t sound like something you would really want to shrug at and say <em>\u201cah well I reckon I still will\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But by the same token, <strong>AGNs are determined using the most critical aircraft currently doing scheduled operations<\/strong>. So if you\u2019re looking at a military base (that is available for civilian ops when needed) then that AGN might not \u201cwork\u201d on paper, but the airport may well work for you in reality.<\/p>\n<h4>Then came the answer<\/h4>\n<p>Hot off the press &#8211;\u00a0<strong>&#8220;It\u2019s the pilot-in-command\u2019s decision to verify if the aerodrome is capable of accommodating the AGN of the aircraft. The published AGN serves as a tool and aids in the decision making.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There it is, clear as can be.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You still have to make the decision!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For that, throw in some common sense and airmanship.<\/p>\n<p><strong>On fire?<\/strong> All bets off, anywhere works.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tech stop of medical diversion?<\/strong> Probably not the wisest to plan to use an airport whose AGN falls below the category you require. Chances are if you mess up there are going to be some pretty big insurance and legal questions getting asked like <em>\u201cthe AGN literally told you the obstacle clearance wasn\u2019t enough so why did you try?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>And remember it isn&#8217;t the whole picture.<\/h4>\n<p><em>Just\u00a0<\/em>using the AGN also isn&#8217;t a good idea because<strong> it doesn&#8217;t take into account all the info you need.<\/strong>\u00a0It doesn&#8217;t, for example, cover airport operating hours which is quite important if you\u2019re intending on using an airport because &#8211; if it ain\u2019t open, then that\u2019s going to be difficult.<\/p>\n<p>There is a whole load of information you\u2019ll need beyond just the AGN in order to determine suitability. The AGN is only <i>one piece <\/i>of information (albeit it a piece filled with a lot of smaller pieces of information).<\/p>\n<h4>We are happy to ask some more questions if you need.<\/h4>\n<p>We hadn\u2019t come across this before and this isn\u2019t a solid answer, so<strong> get in touch if this impacts your planning, and if you\u2019ve spotted an airport whose AGN is lower than your aircraft&#8217;s.\u00a0<\/strong>Especially\u00a0if you know for a fact your aircraft has operated into there perfectly safely.<\/p>\n<p>Send us some specific details and we\u2019ll dig deeper!
