It\u2019s called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/RIM-OF-THE-PACIFIC-RIMPAC\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Rim of the Pacific Exercise<\/a>, or RIMPAC for short.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a big deal \u2013 this year over twenty-six major nations (including the US, Canada, the UK, and Australia) are taking part in <strong>extensive naval and aerial activity<\/strong> happening every day through a lengthy period.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re operating into (or near) Hawaii during the exercise, it\u2019d be a good idea to brief on what to expect. The <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/RIMPAC-2022-Impact-Statement-Edits-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FAA\u2019s Impact Statement<\/a> is the official guidance, but it\u2019s a solid read. The usual suspects will be included \u2013 all permanent warning and restricted areas on your charts, along with other types of special use airspace with\u00a0 scary looking abbreviations like \u2018ATCAA,\u2019 \u2018ALTRV,\u2019 and fancy names like \u2018Nalu,\u2019 \u2018Haka\u2019 and \u2018Luna.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Big picture \u2013 don\u2019t go into the red boxes when they\u2019re active (more on that in a sec).<\/p>\n<p>Before you tackle the official FAA Impact Statement, for the love of Pete <strong>have a map open next to it.<\/strong> Once you can see where all this airspace actually is, as I learned, things suddenly get a lot easier \u2013 luckily the FAA has put one together:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-18770\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screen-Shot-2022-06-15-at-4.31.11-pm-907x1024.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"907\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screen-Shot-2022-06-15-at-4.31.11-pm-907x1024.png 907w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screen-Shot-2022-06-15-at-4.31.11-pm-266x300.png 266w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screen-Shot-2022-06-15-at-4.31.11-pm-768x867.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screen-Shot-2022-06-15-at-4.31.11-pm-1361x1536.png 1361w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screen-Shot-2022-06-15-at-4.31.11-pm-1814x2048.png 1814w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/Screen-Shot-2022-06-15-at-4.31.11-pm.png 1830w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 907px) 100vw, 907px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4>Righto, timings.<\/h4>\n<p>Even though RIMPAC starts earlier, most of the actual flying won\u2019t kick off until <strong>July 11.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As a general rule, any restricted airspace that goes high (Surface to FL600) will be active each day between <strong>07:00 \u2013 22:00 HST (17-08z)<\/strong>. Outside of these times, any restrictions will generally be low level (less than 12,000\u2019).<\/p>\n<p>But, there are some <strong>exceptions<\/strong> to look out for. Got that map ready? Bueno&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>The big one is that MILU East, MILU South, W-192\/3\/4 (all south of Oahu) <strong>will remain in effect 24\/7<\/strong>, and at all levels.<\/p>\n<p>There are also some subtle differences to timings for W189B and W190 which also extend up high. These are only active from mid-afternoon.<\/p>\n<h4>What will be the impact?<\/h4>\n<p>Just remember: <strong>15 minutes. <\/strong>It seems to be the magic number.<\/p>\n<p>You can still file as per normal, but if you\u2019re operating on an affected route (including some PACOTS), you\u2019ll have to accept delays for re-routes of up to 15 minutes. Which means more contingency fuel.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the routes that the FAA&#8217;s guidance specifically mentions:<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>To\/from Asia:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>PACOT tracks 11\/12 and A\/B between Hawaii and the Far East.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>To\/from the US:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re routing between the <strong>Pacific Northwest<\/strong> and Hawaii, try and plan above FL290. If you\u2019re unable to, \u2018Nalu\u2019 will get in the way. ATC will be able to vector you onto another airway (A331), but it will mean a reroute. If you can stay above, there will be no impact.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re headed to or from the <strong>Pacific Southwest,<\/strong> \u2018Mahi\u2019 and \u2018Haka\u2019 will affect flights at all levels, with the same delays.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><em>To\/from the South Pacific:<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Flights between Hawaii and <strong>Tahiti, Fiji<\/strong> and <strong>Samoa<\/strong> will be impacted by Luna West, Central and East can also expect reroutes.<\/p>\n<p>The FAA advise in all cases, the delays will not be worse than fifteen minutes (and that\u2019s a worst case scenario).<\/p>\n<h4>What about Hono?<\/h4>\n<p>Retractable barriers are present on three of <strong>PHNL\/Honolulu\u2019s<\/strong> four runways, which are used to simulate carrier landings \u2013 pretty neat huh?<\/p>\n<p>The only downside is that when a capture is needed, that runway will be <strong>unavailable for forty-five minutes.<\/strong> The FAA advise that this could cause delays of up to fifteen minutes while ATC juggles things around.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18772\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18772\" class=\"size-large wp-image-18772\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/120225-f-rz955-041-1024x502.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"502\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/120225-f-rz955-041-1024x502.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/120225-f-rz955-041-300x147.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/120225-f-rz955-041-768x376.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/120225-f-rz955-041-1536x753.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/120225-f-rz955-041-2048x1004.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18772\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Barrier arrests will close a single runway in Honolulu for at least 45 minutes.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Then there\u2019s the two nearby military airports \u2013 <strong>PHIK\/Hickam<\/strong> and <strong>PHNG\/Kaneoehe Bay.<\/strong> As they will be used to house a number of military aircraft transiting to and from the exercise (the rest will be on a carrier), ATC may need to implement <strong>flow control<\/strong> at PHNL\/Honolulu to keep things within capacity.
