{"id":18304,"date":"2022-06-10T09:31:56","date_gmt":"2022-06-10T13:31:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=18304"},"modified":"2022-06-10T09:32:28","modified_gmt":"2022-06-10T13:32:28","slug":"always-listening-black-boxes-in-the-cloud","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/always-listening-black-boxes-in-the-cloud\/","title":{"rendered":"Always Listening: Black Boxes in the Cloud"},"content":{"rendered":"<h4>The problem with black boxes is that they are attached to the airplane.<\/h4>\n<p>Although their contents are invaluable for figuring out the cause of an accident<em>, if we can\u2019t find the airframe, we don\u2019t get the answers. <\/em><\/p>\n<p>It took two years to find <a href=\"https:\/\/bea.aero\/docspa\/2009\/f-cp090601.en\/pdf\/f-cp090601.en.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Air France 447<\/a>, while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mh370.gov.my\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Malaysian 370<\/a> remains lost to this day. The industry seems to be becoming more aware that there is <em>something wrong<\/em> with the way we have been tracking, searching for, and finding accident aircraft.<\/p>\n<p>And as part of this, there is an emerging push for black box data to be <strong>streamed<\/strong> live during a flight using internet-based technology.<\/p>\n<p>From a safety perspective, it makes sense. But from a practical standpoint, <strong>it\u2019s not all smooth sailing.<\/strong> Here\u2019s a brief look at how these new technologies might work, and why organisations such as IFALPA, along with some pilots, are still pushing back.<\/p>\n<h4>The &#8216;Cloud&#8217;.<\/h4>\n<p>Storing data in the cloud is becoming a reality with both flight data and voice. All you really need is an internet connection to let the magic happen.<\/p>\n<p>With that in mind, the idea is that black box data could be <strong>streamed to the cloud constantly<\/strong>. Meaning it is immediately available to safety investigators if or when an accident or incident happens.<\/p>\n<h4>ICAO.<\/h4>\n<p>As a result of accidents like the ones mentioned above, <strong>ICAO is implementing a<\/strong> <strong>mandate<\/strong> for new aircraft with MTOWs over 27,000kg (60,000lbs) due to come into effect from 2023.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an extension of their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icao.int\/safety\/globaltracking\/Documents\/GADSS%20Concept%20of%20Operations%20-%20Version%206.0%20-%2007%20June%202017.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Aeronautical Distress and Safety System<\/a>, or simply \u2018GADSS\u2019 \u2013 their initiative to make tracking and finding aircraft in emergencies much more efficient.<\/p>\n<p>A big part of it is that onboard equipment will need to recognise abnormal or emergency conditions from parameters such as speed or unusual attitudes <em>automatically<\/em>, and then begin broadcasting very accurate position reports as often as <strong>once a minute<\/strong> \u2013 as opposed to the 15 minutes when ops are normal.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18700\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18700\" class=\"wp-image-18700 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/GADSS-1024x645.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"645\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/GADSS-1024x645.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/GADSS-300x189.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/GADSS-768x484.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/GADSS-1536x968.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/GADSS.jpg 1850w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18700\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ICAO GADSS &#8211; systems must automatically detect situations of distress and broadcast position more frequently.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Big Tech.<\/h4>\n<p>Technologies are being developed to allow manufacturers to comply with these GADSS requirements, and in some cases they are taking things one stop further \u2013 to include flight data streaming.<\/p>\n<p>Take Satellite Communication heavy hitter <strong>Inmarsat<\/strong> for example. Courtesy: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.honeywell.com\/us\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Honeywell<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<h4>IFALPA says nay&#8230;for now anyway.<\/h4>\n<p>So on the face of it, black box streaming seems like a no-brainer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But there are still<\/strong> <strong>concerns<\/strong>. On May 9, IFALPA published a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifalpa.org\/publications\/library\/streaming-of-flight-data--3607\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">position paper<\/a> on just this issue \u2013 and it seems they\u2019re not on board yet, due to<strong> security concerns.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Streaming flight data on the internet may open the door to those wanting to leak, or corrupt it. It is important that the media and public domain don\u2019t get a hold it before investigations have taken place, and there may even be those with more malicious intent who want to alter it in some way.<\/p>\n<p>And there are no existing technologies that are 100% secure. IFALPA argue that as the technology develops, so too must our ability to protect it. And until then, IFALPA will remain opposed to it.<\/p>\n<h4>Other problems.<\/h4>\n<p>It\u2019s not just security either. <strong>Here are some other roadblocks<\/strong> that live flight data streaming faces:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Privacy &#8211;<\/strong><em> a<\/em>cross the board there may be push back from crew who, understandably, don\u2019t want their voices recorded and broadcast to the internet. It may be for similar reasons why the industry has resisted the use of cockpit video recordings for the past two decades, despite the desires of the ATSB.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cost &#8211;<\/strong> The suggestion of retrofitting this type of technology to existing airframes would be timely and <strong>very costly<\/strong>. And in the current industry environment, there is likely to be significant push-back on introducing additional expenses.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Speed &#8211;<\/strong> Have you ever tried to stream a movie on that hideously long red-eye? It can be notoriously <strong>slow<\/strong> and <strong>unreliable<\/strong> \u2013 especially in more remote parts of the world. Flight data recorders also save an immense amount of data, which means satellite time and storage could become uber-expensive.<\/p>\n<p>For live flight data streaming to be effective and reliable, the logistics behind it also need to be rock solid. And there are concerns we\u2019re not there yet.<\/p>\n<p>Live flight data streaming will eventually become the new normal. But how long that takes depends on the aviation\u2019s ability to overcome these hurdles.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The problem with black boxes is that they are attached to the airplane.
