{"id":18257,"date":"2022-05-11T11:40:50","date_gmt":"2022-05-11T15:40:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=18257"},"modified":"2022-05-11T11:40:50","modified_gmt":"2022-05-11T15:40:50","slug":"somalia-joins-the-a-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/somalia-joins-the-a-team\/","title":{"rendered":"Somalia joins the A Team"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Full ATC service is returning to Somalia!<\/strong> The HCSM\/Mogadishu FIR is currently Class G uncontrolled, which means a lot of fairly annoying <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/we-need-to-talk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">IFBP calls<\/a> to make. This is about to change though&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>(Well, not the IFBP thing sadly, they recommend you continue these even during the trial period).<\/p>\n<p><strong>From<\/strong> <strong>May 11 to September 21<\/strong> they will be running a trial which will see the airspace from <strong>FL245<\/strong> up become Class A controlled airspace.<\/p>\n<p>The trial will only be between <strong>0300-1800z<\/strong> (so during the day), but will cover the entire FIR including oceanic areas.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Notam A0051\/22<\/strong> (A0028\/22) advises on this, whilst<strong>\u00a0AIP SUP 02\/22<\/strong> has all the info (we&#8217;re still waiting for a copy!)<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_18272\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-18272\" class=\"wp-image-18272 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/SOMALIA-airspace-map-1-1024x738.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"738\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/SOMALIA-airspace-map-1-1024x738.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/SOMALIA-airspace-map-1-300x216.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/SOMALIA-airspace-map-1-768x553.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/SOMALIA-airspace-map-1-1536x1107.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/SOMALIA-airspace-map-1-2048x1476.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-18272\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The entire FIR will be Class A at and above FL245<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Who to talk to in Class A?<\/h4>\n<p><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">The following frequencies are your best bet:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>VHF<\/b><strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u00a0132.5 <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>MHz<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0if\u00a0<span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">within 240NM of <\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">position MOGDU.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>HF (Mogadishu Control)<\/b><br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u25aa<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Day Primary 11300Khz <\/span> <br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u25aa<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Day Secondary 8879Khz or 13288Khz <\/span> <br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u25aa<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Night Primary 5517Khz<\/span> <br role=\"presentation\" \/><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u25aa<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Nigh Secondary 11300Khz or 3467Khz <\/span><\/li>\n<li><strong>CPDLC\u00a0<\/strong>for those FANS1 equipped, logon address\u00a0<strong>HCSM<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you lose comms, then the procedures are pretty standard. These are available in the Somalia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.icao.int\/ESAF\/FISS\/Documents\/Docs%2031.01.2019\/AIP%20SUP%20NO.05%20of%202019.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SUP 05\/2018<\/a>. Or you have the full contingency plans to follow in <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/AIP_SUP_03_of_22.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">SUP 03\/22<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>SATCOM<\/h4>\n<p>Mogadishu have also re-confirmed their dedicated SATCOM numbers. Here they are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>+252 6133 50047<\/li>\n<li>+252 6233 50047<\/li>\n<li>+252 1857 390<\/li>\n<li>+252 1857 391<\/li>\n<li>+252 1857 392<\/li>\n<li>+252 1857 393<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>What&#8217;s the difference between Class A and Class G?<\/h4>\n<p>In a nutshell, Class A doesn&#8217;t have VFR traffic in it, and you do need <strong>ATC clearances.<\/strong> Traffic will be provided with 10mins lateral\/longitudinal separation and <strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">2000&#8242;<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u00a0v<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">ertic<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">a<\/span><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">l <\/span><\/strong><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><strong>separation<\/strong> at and above FL410, 1000&#8242; at and below FL400<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Class G is uncontrolled<\/strong> which means it is all procedural, deconfliction services and traffic advisory services only.<\/p>\n<h4>What&#8217;s (less) new in Mogadishu.<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Somalia still isn&#8217;t the safest region to fly through. Major authorities <strong>prohibit flights below (generally) FL260<\/strong>, and recommend sticking to the oceanic routings rather than overflying the land.
