{"id":16716,"date":"2022-01-12T05:59:37","date_gmt":"2022-01-12T10:59:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=16716"},"modified":"2022-01-12T06:59:03","modified_gmt":"2022-01-12T11:59:03","slug":"us-west-coast-flights-halted-north-korean-missile-threat-or-coincidence","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/us-west-coast-flights-halted-north-korean-missile-threat-or-coincidence\/","title":{"rendered":"US West Coast flights halted: North Korean missile threat, or coincidence?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The US FAA has released a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/FAANews\/status\/1480956796395261958\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">brief statement<\/a> confirming that on Jan 10, a ground stop was put in place at major airports on the West Coast due to <strong>&#8220;precautionary measures.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Around the same time, North Korea carried out a <a href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/01\/10\/asia\/north-korea-missile-intl\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">missile test<\/a> \u2013 the second in a week. There are also reports of airborne aircraft being directed to land.<\/p>\n<p>The disruption was short lived (about twenty minutes), before operations went back to normal.<\/p>\n<p>The speculation about why the ground stop came into effect arose for three reasons;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Information<\/strong> on why a ground stop is in place is usually provided<\/li>\n<li>The\u00a0air traffic control measure is generally used to slow or stops the flow of aircraft to a <strong>particular airport<\/strong>, due to weather or an operational hazard. Of course, North Korean is known for its own propaganda&#8230;<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16733\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16733\" class=\"size-large wp-image-16733\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/missile-trajectories-1024x569.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"569\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/missile-trajectories-1024x569.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/missile-trajectories-300x167.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/missile-trajectories-768x427.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/missile-trajectories.png 1275w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16733\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/science-and-technology\/2019\/04\/06\/gliding-missiles-that-fly-faster-than-mach-5-are-coming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Economist<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>But hypersonic missiles are dangerous, for two main reasons:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unlike ballistic missiles, which have a fairly predictable trajectory, hypersonic missiles can fly much closer to the earth&#8217;s surface and are <strong>more difficult to intercept<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>Hypersonic missiles can travel up to five times the speed of sound, meaning they can <strong>hit a target in a much shorter flight time.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Only a handful of countries are reported to be working on the development of hypersonic missiles: the US, Russia, India, and China, and North Korea.<\/p>\n<h4>What could explain it.<\/h4>\n<p>The launch in North Korea was <strong>not announced beforehand<\/strong>, and it is possible that it was detected as a threat leading to the activation of protocols that include notifying the FAA.<\/p>\n<p>Although this looks likely, it\u2019s important to remember that <strong>nothing official has been announced to confirm this yet.<\/strong> \u00a0The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) have since advised that it did not issue an official warning.<\/p>\n<p>It did however <em>detect<\/em> the launch, which was assessed not to be a danger to the mainland US. These are typically intended to be a display of capability, rather than an intent to use them.<\/p>\n<p>For aviation the threat is primarily based in the <strong>oceanic portions of the ZKKP\/Pyongyang FIR, and UHHH\/Khabarovsk FIRs west of Japan.<\/strong> As the launches have repeatedly been carried out with no advance warning, aircraft are exposed to <strong>risk from falling debris from missile tests.<\/strong> You can find more information on this in a previous article which you can read <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/north-korea-airspace-update\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h4>Outlook for 2022<\/h4>\n<p>Most experts seem to agree that North Korea faces some big challenges on the home front this year, including its economy and a worsening humanitarian crisis. Its missile program has continued and there has been no recent reassurance that it intends to work on bettering its relationship with the US, or South Korea, nor any intent to provide <strong>advance warning of test launches.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These events might not be related, but the speculation itself demonstrates an ongoing concern regarding North Korean actions.
