{"id":16529,"date":"2022-01-03T12:33:32","date_gmt":"2022-01-03T17:33:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=16529"},"modified":"2022-01-05T05:17:58","modified_gmt":"2022-01-05T10:17:58","slug":"honduras-has-a-new-airport","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/honduras-has-a-new-airport\/","title":{"rendered":"Honduras has a New Airport"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here is the lowdown on the new international airport in Honduras, for anyone who might be thinking of heading there.<\/p>\n<h4>Where is it?<\/h4>\n<p><strong>MHPR\/Palmerola<\/strong>, also known as <b>Comayagua International, <\/b>has been built\u00a0on what was the Soto Cano Air base. Inaugurated in October 2021,\u00a0it is now the new civil and commercial international airport for Honduras.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16532\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16532\" class=\"wp-image-16532 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Honduras-Airports-1024x678.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Honduras-Airports-1024x678.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Honduras-Airports-300x199.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Honduras-Airports-768x509.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Honduras-Airports-1536x1017.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Honduras-Airports.png 1918w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16532\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The new airport is approximately 80km from the old one which lies in the Capital, Tegucigalpa.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>What has it got?<\/h4>\n<p>The new airport boasts a <strong>2441m \/ 8009&#8242; runway<\/strong> with an RNP approach to both runway 17 and 35, and backup VOR approaches. <strong>There is no ILS\u00a0<\/strong>and there are currently no approach lighting for night or IMC ops.<\/p>\n<p>It is planned for<strong>\u00a024\/7 operations,<\/strong>\u00a0but for now it is only open during <strong>daylight hours (06-18L)<\/strong>.\u00a0After hours permission may be available by contacting the airport manager on <span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">+504 3140 3317<\/span> in advance.<\/p>\n<p>A report from someone who has headed in recently suggested that<em> &#8220;All traffic is routed mostly via TGU and in contact with TGU approach as far as I know for traffic landing north.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<div id=\"1641375959.001600\" class=\"c-virtual_list__item\" tabindex=\"-1\" role=\"listitem\" data-qa=\"virtual-list-item\">\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__background c-message_kit__background--hovered p-message_pane_message__message c-message_kit__message\" role=\"presentation\" data-qa=\"message_container\" data-qa-unprocessed=\"false\" data-qa-placeholder=\"false\">\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__hover c-message_kit__hover--hovered\" role=\"document\" aria-roledescription=\"message\" data-qa-hover=\"true\">\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__actions c-message_kit__actions--above\">\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__gutter\">\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__gutter__right\" role=\"presentation\" data-qa=\"message_content\">\n<div class=\"c-message_kit__blocks c-message_kit__blocks--rich_text\">\n<div class=\"c-message__message_blocks c-message__message_blocks--rich_text\">\n<div class=\"p-block_kit_renderer\" data-qa=\"block-kit-renderer\">\n<div class=\"p-block_kit_renderer__block_wrapper p-block_kit_renderer__block_wrapper--first\">\n<div class=\"p-rich_text_block\" dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The old airport, MHTG\/Toncontin, has a 2021m \/ 6631&#8242; runway with an RNP (AR) approach to runway 20, and a VOR to runway 02.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a quick look at the new airport:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Palmerola a menos de 30 d\u00edas para iniciar vuelos\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pSX3JcPMCeQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h4>Things to look out for at MHPR\/Palmerola<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>The airport <strong>elevation is 2064 feet<\/strong>, and there is some tricky terrain all round with the airport sitting in a valley, giving it an <strong>MSA of 9900&#8242;.<\/strong> The terrain also means departures (unless you&#8217;re in a super climb-achieving military jet) are <strong>limited to runway 17.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>RNP Rwy 17 brings you in from point PR702, at 5600&#8242;. There is a chunky<strong> hill right under it<\/strong> with a mast on top sitting at 3675&#8242;, so after you pass here you need to descend to 4300&#8242; by PT701, which is only 4 nm away. The vertical approach path is a nice standard 3 degree, but you&#8217;re going to want to <strong>look out for the climb gradient<\/strong> for the missed approach because it requires a minimum of 300&#8217;\/nm.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16558\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/MH_AD-2.MHPR-SID-RNAV-RWY35-A-791x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"791\" height=\"1024\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/MH_AD-2.MHPR-SID-RNAV-RWY35-A-791x1024.jpg 791w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/MH_AD-2.MHPR-SID-RNAV-RWY35-A-232x300.jpg 232w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/MH_AD-2.MHPR-SID-RNAV-RWY35-A-768x994.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/MH_AD-2.MHPR-SID-RNAV-RWY35-A-1187x1536.jpg 1187w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/MH_AD-2.MHPR-SID-RNAV-RWY35-A-1583x2048.jpg 1583w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/MH_AD-2.MHPR-SID-RNAV-RWY35-A-scaled.jpg 1978w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 791px) 100vw, 791px\" \/><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>The <strong>missed approach<\/strong> is also quite complicated with a bunch of <em>&#8220;head here once you&#8217;ve reached xxxx altitude&#8221;<\/em> instructions. The approach and missed approach for runway 35 is a little less complicated since (once you&#8217;re over the terrain to the south of the airport) it is less challenging.<\/li>\n<li>Not that you would be there anyway (because of the terrain) but to the east, south and west lie various <strong>Danger or Restricted areas<\/strong> to look out for.<\/li>\n<li>The airport lies in a <strong>valley.<\/strong> With terrain either side. That means there is a chance of some mean <strong>topographic turbulence<\/strong> if the wind is blowing the right way. The old Toncontin airport overview suggests wind shear and downdrafts on short finals. The new airport will probably have similar threats.<\/li>\n<li>The old MHTG\/Toncontin airport requires a specific &#8216;Mountainous Terrain&#8217; Airport Qualification. While the new airport does not, the <strong>terrain is a challenge<\/strong> so look out!<\/li>\n<li>The region sees fairly nice temperatures through the year with<strong> highs of 29\u00b0C (85\u00b0F) and lows of 16\u00b0C (60\u00b0F)<\/strong>. Rainfall peaks in September to November with an average of 119mm (4.7&#8243;).
