{"id":16251,"date":"2021-12-07T05:08:58","date_gmt":"2021-12-07T10:08:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=16251"},"modified":"2021-12-07T05:08:58","modified_gmt":"2021-12-07T10:08:58","slug":"uk-free-route-airspace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/uk-free-route-airspace\/","title":{"rendered":"UK Free Route Airspace"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>December 2 has been a big day in the UK &#8211; it marks the <strong>biggest airspace change ever implemented in the United Kingdom.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A big portion of UK airspace is now free route airspace, and here\u2019s what you need to know about it.<\/p>\n<h4>What is \u2018free route\u2019 airspace?<\/h4>\n<p>In &#8216;<em>not<\/em> free route airspace&#8217; you are confined to what is effectively a motorway (freeway if you\u2019re American) in the air &#8211; a big corridor, defined by points along it, and you follow these until you reach your junction ad turn off. It is rarely the most direct route.<\/p>\n<p>Free route airspace allows you to route from a defined entry to a defined exit point direct. Straight through the fields if you like. It also allows more freedom for operators to fly the most time or fuel efficient route, taking into account weather.<\/p>\n<h4>The benefit is big.<\/h4>\n<p>That it is.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The new airspace structure in the UK is expected to <strong>save around 500,000 nm a year\u00a0<\/strong>of flying and that means a big reduction in CO2 &#8211; they are estimating around <strong>12,000 tonnes a year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nats.aero\/news\/the-biggest-airspace-change-ever-implemented-in-the-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NATS own article<\/a> on it.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16252\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16252\" class=\"wp-image-16252 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/NATS-FRA.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"538\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/NATS-FRA.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/NATS-FRA-300x158.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/NATS-FRA-768x404.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16252\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">And their nice graphic too.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Where is this airspace?<\/h4>\n<p>It is in northern UK and<strong> consists of 150,000 nm2 of airspace<\/strong> over\u00a0the North Sea,\u00a0Scotland,\u00a0North\u00a0Atlantic,\u00a0Northern Ireland and a small portion of northern\u00a0England &#8211; so within the\u00a0Scottish UIR, London UIR and Shanwick OCA, and affecting the route network over some international waters. This has been going on a little longer, and large areas of Europe already have it implemented.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16255\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16255\" class=\"wp-image-16255 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Euro-FRA-1024x670.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"670\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Euro-FRA-1024x670.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Euro-FRA-300x196.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Euro-FRA-768x503.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Euro-FRA-1536x1006.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Euro-FRA.jpeg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16255\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">There is more than you think.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>They are also working on cross-border activities which may create even more direct routings in the future.<\/p>\n<p>Norway&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.public.nm.eurocontrol.int\/PUBPORTAL\/gateway\/spec\/PORTAL.25.0.0.7.62\/_res\/327460\/en_circ_2021_a_003_en.pdf?NODE_CLASS=DRON&amp;PUBLICATION_STATUS=PUBLISHED\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AIC A03\/21<\/a> published Oct 2021 provides info on the operations between the FRA in the Finland FIR, Copenhagen FIR, Polaris FIR, Riga FIR, Sweden FIR, Tallinn FIR (known as the <strong>NEFAB FRA<\/strong> meaning the\u00a0North European Functional Airspace Block) and, of course, the Scottish FIR.\u00a0<strong>These are known as the \u201cBorealis Alliance\u201d.<\/strong> <em>(Here&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/Borealis.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a link to the Borealis Alliance Presentation<\/a>, if you want to find out more about the background and current stages of the overall project.)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Norway&#8217;s AIC tells us that flights routing through these airspaces will be eligible for Free Airspace Routings if they have a <strong>planned trajectory within the following vertical limits:<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<ul>\n<li>DK-SE FAB FRA FL285-FL660<\/li>\n<li>NEFAB FRA FL095-FL660 (EETT\/EFIN FIR FL095-FL660, EVRR FIR FL095-FL660, ENOR FIR\u00a0FL135-FL660)<\/li>\n<li>EGPX FRA (FL255-FL660)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Additionally, if you are routing to\/from the UK FRA to the NEFAB FRA\u00a0then you are going to have to<strong> file some intermediary waypoints<\/strong> because they have a lack of radar cover there.
