{"id":16124,"date":"2021-11-29T12:23:20","date_gmt":"2021-11-29T17:23:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=16124"},"modified":"2021-11-29T12:23:20","modified_gmt":"2021-11-29T17:23:20","slug":"the-potus-tfr-is-a-no-to-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/the-potus-tfr-is-a-no-to-us\/","title":{"rendered":"The POTUS TFR is a NO TO US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Most US folk are going to be fairly familiar with TFRs, particularly those in place due the President, but we thought we would do a little recap on the one for <strong>Wilmington, Delaware<\/strong> because of where it lies and the impact it has on the surrounding airspace &#8211; or rather, the traffic flow which you might find yourself in.<\/p>\n<h4>What is a Presidential TFR?<\/h4>\n<p>For those not familiar, a Temporary Flight Restriction is activated, for security reasons, in airspace that the President of the United States will be flying into. The TFR area is\u00a0<strong>typically made up of two rings\u00a0<\/strong>with a\u00a0smaller one of about 10-12 nautical miles and a larger going out to about 30 nautical miles.\u00a0Generally, General Aviation is <strong>restricted to not below 18,000\u2019. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The reason for GA flights bearing the brunt of the &#8216;no go&#8217; is because<strong> of TSA screening,\u00a0<\/strong>or rather the lack of, and the security implications this may have.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>You can find info on all current and active TFRs <a href=\"https:\/\/tfr.faa.gov\/tfr2\/list.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">on the FAA website site here.<\/a> They include the type, dimensions, times and any specific info and guidance, as well as handy visuals.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16130\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16130\" class=\"wp-image-16130 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Biden-shot-1024x651.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"651\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Biden-shot-1024x651.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Biden-shot-300x191.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Biden-shot-768x488.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Biden-shot-1536x976.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Biden-shot.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16130\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here is a (blurry) example of the Wilmington, DE TFR rings<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Why are we talking about this one in particular?<\/h4>\n<p>The current US President has a private residence in Wilmington, Delaware, which means there are probably going to be a fair few TFRs activated in the area for when he flies in and out. The previous President caused a similar disruption around the Palm Beach area.<\/p>\n<p>This particular one encompasses an airport &#8211; <strong>KILG\/New Castle airport<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; in its inner ring which is often frequented by General Aviation folk. Thankfully,\u00a0they have agreed to change up the usual no-go restrictions and continue to allow access to the airport even during times of Presidential presence.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16128\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16128\" class=\"wp-image-16128 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Screenshot-2021-11-25-at-17.12.10-1024x713.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"713\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Screenshot-2021-11-25-at-17.12.10-1024x713.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Screenshot-2021-11-25-at-17.12.10-300x209.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Screenshot-2021-11-25-at-17.12.10-768x534.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Screenshot-2021-11-25-at-17.12.10.png 1207w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16128\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The TFR is centred around the President&#8217;s private residence and lies close to JAIKE and some busy airspace.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>New Castle\u2019s new restrictions<\/h4>\n<p>OK, not new, since this TFR has been in place for a while now. But in case you don\u2019t know, and do want to go, here is a refresher on the regulations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>If you are GA and want to just transit the inner ring then<strong> no can do while it is active.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>You will be prohibited from operating to KILG\/New Castle and N57\/New Garden airports while the TFR is active <b>unless you have <\/b>prearranged TSA screening at a gateway airport (or TSA screening for departures) at least 24 hours in advance\n<ul>\n<li>KIAD\/Washington Dulles and KABE\/Lehigh Valley are your current<strong> gateway options.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Some departures and approaches to <strong>KEVY\/Summit Airport<\/strong> might be affected during TFR active times.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aopa.org\/news-and-media\/all-news\/2021\/february\/04\/faa-creates-gateways-for-new-presidential-tfr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here is an AOPA article<\/a> on the gateway airports for this TFR.<\/p>\n<h4>Bigger route restrictions<\/h4>\n<p>There are some pretty<strong> major routes along the east coast affected<\/strong> while the TFR is active as well though.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The standard <strong>JAIKE arrival into KTEB\/Teterboro<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>South arrivals<\/strong> into KMMU\/Morristown and KCDW\/Caldwell<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you are operating up from Florida and the Caribbean then you have <strong>two re-route options available<\/strong> to you to avoid the restricted bits:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Deep Water Atlantic Rout<\/strong>e &#8211; via VIRST Y494 YAALE YETTI Y497 SUBBS CYN GXU RBV V249 METRO<\/li>\n<li>Route through<strong> Cleveland Center<\/strong> &#8211; via ROD KLYNE Q29 JHW LVZ4 and\/or SVM J70 JHW LVZ4<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The deepwater route is the shorter option if you meet the \u201cflying over deepwater\u201d capability and requirements.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16131\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16131\" class=\"wp-image-16131 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Screenshot-2021-11-25-at-17.20.28-1024x778.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Screenshot-2021-11-25-at-17.20.28-1024x778.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Screenshot-2021-11-25-at-17.20.28-300x228.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Screenshot-2021-11-25-at-17.20.28-768x583.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Screenshot-2021-11-25-at-17.20.28.png 1053w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-16131\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">On a normal day, the airspace in this area is busy. Add in restrictions and it gets&#8230; messier.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>Operating around the DC Metros?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You\u2019ll probably want to file a JERES J220 BIGEO MAGIO J70 LVZ LVZ4 route.<\/p>\n<p>All re-routes for Jacksonville Center, Atlanta Center and Washington Center will be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fly.faa.gov\/ratreader\/jsp\/index.jsp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">published on the FAA Current Re-routes webpage.<\/a><\/p>\n<h4>So far, all of this is a copy and paste of the NBAA info page<\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/nbaa.org\/aircraft-operations\/airspace\/alerts\/notams-and-tfrs\/air-traffic-impacts-associated-with-presidential-tfrs-in-wilmington-de\/?_ga=2.180181091.695791988.1637581525-1844408890.1631520332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Which you can read here<\/a> if you fancy seeing it in a slightly different font.<\/p>\n<p>There is a reason we are bringing this all up now (which was also highlighted by the NBAA) though&#8230; Holiday Season Traffic.<\/p>\n<h4>Holiday Season Traffic<\/h4>\n<p>KTEB\/Teterboro, KMMU\/Morristown, KCDW\/Caldwell, and the JAIKE arrival get busy during holiday season. As does Washington Center (which handles 50% of the Caribbean traffic flow from the South), Jacksonville Center and Atlanta Center.
