Hong Kong is adding a new runway and they\u2019ve just finished building it! Six years in the making and due to open 2022, the new runway is set to <em>transform Hong Kong from a<\/em> <em>city airport<\/em> to an <em>airport city.<\/em><\/p>\n<h4>What\u2019s it got now?<\/h4>\n<p>Hong Kong currently has two runways <strong>07L\/25R and 07R\/25L, both offering 12,467\u2019 (3800m)<\/strong> and a bunch of CAT II\/III approach options.<\/p>\n<p>The new one will be no less decent &#8211; planned to be the same length, and 60m wide.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15594\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15594\" class=\"wp-image-15594 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/New-rnway-1024x607.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/New-rnway-1024x607.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/New-rnway-300x178.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/New-rnway-768x455.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/New-rnway-1536x910.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/New-rnway.jpg 1687w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15594\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Here&#8217;s what the computer says it will all look like when it is completed.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Why do they need it?<\/h4>\n<p>Hong Kong is a major hub and currently sees around 419,795 traffic movements a year, which amounted to 71.5million passengers and 4.8millions tonnes of cargo moving through it (back in 2019).<\/p>\n<p>Here is the bit you are probably more interested in &#8211; it can handle just under<strong> 70 flights an hour at peak time<\/strong> and has 119 passengers stands, 55 cargo, 26 maintenance and 12 temporary stands.<\/p>\n<p>The airport expansion will enable them to handle an <strong>additional 30 million passengers and will add 57 new parking spots.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/hong-kong-is-a-pain-in-the-ass-its-official\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">We mentioned the slot and parking issue a few years ago.<\/a> It is deceptively green at the moment, but this is probably more to do with a certain pandemic than any real improvement.<\/p>\n<p>The current runways also do not run 24\/7 though, there are<strong> regular maintenance closures.<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ais.gov.hk\/HKAIP\/supp\/08-21.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">AIP SUP 08\/21 updated on October 13 2021 has the info.<\/a><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>07L\/25R closes 3 nights a week, and 07R\/25L closing for 4, between 1601-2315 UTC<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>07L\/25R also closes daily between 0116-1025 UTC.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So more runway and more parking will mean a big improvement on your chances of ad-hoc ops in.<\/p>\n<h4>(OK, we\u2019ll slot in a quick slot summary)<\/h4>\n<p>This was issued in June 2021: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hkgslot.gov.hk\/others\/Slot%20Coordination%20Guidelines%20at%20HKIA.pdf\">The Hong Kong slot getting guide.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>In brief, you probably want to do this:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Apply for a landing permit <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cad.gov.hk\/english\/efiling_home.html\">www.cad.gov.hk\/english\/efiling_home.html<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Apply for parking <a href=\"https:\/\/extranet.hongkongairport.com\/baps\/\">https:\/\/extranet.hongkongairport.com\/baps\/<br \/>\n<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Apply for Ground Handling <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hkbac.com\/en\">http:\/\/www.hkbac.com\/en<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Apply for your slots <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hkgslot.gov.hk\/Online_Coordination.ht\">http:\/\/www.hkgslot.gov.hk\/Online_Coordination.ht<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It it a confusing a frustrating process so if it is your first time you might want to get some help from an agent.\u00a0Hong Kong Business Aviation Centre (HKBAC) are based at Hong Kong (and you&#8217;ll be talking to them for your ground handling anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Email: <a href=\"mailto:hkbac@hkbac.com\">hkbac@hkbac.com<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Phone: +852 2949 9000<\/p>\n<h4>Back to the expansion plan: What stage is it at now?<\/h4>\n<p>The runway work is complete. This will be <strong>designated the North runway<\/strong>, while the current north (07L\/25R) will become \u201cCentre\u201d.
