This is where you can find their <strong>International Security NOTAMs (KICZ)<\/strong> and <strong>Special Federal Aviation Regulations (SFAR)<\/strong>, plus information relating to the background of the situations and the prohibitions\/restrictions.<\/p>\n<h4>A summary<\/h4>\n<p>Here is a summary of the <strong>countries with a US FAA airspace prohibition\/restriction<\/strong> in force, and what it (very briefly) says for each one.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Afghanistan<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US Operators are <strong>prohibited<\/strong> from operating in the <strong>OAKX\/Kabul FIR. <\/strong>Overflights are still allowed on airways P500 and G500 which run alongside the eastern boundary of the Kabul FIR.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> There is a risk of direct and indirect fire targeting airports and from surface-to-air fire targeting aircraft operating at low altitudes. Additionally, the recent Taliban takeover has led to zero ATC control across the entire airspace and an extreme threat to aircraft and crew safety and security on the ground. Air defense forces in all neighboring states are likely at high alert status within respective border regions &#8211; target misidentification by military air defense operators remains a credible scenario.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Belarus<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US operators are to exercise<strong> extra caution<\/strong> when operating over, within, in or out of the <strong>UMMV\/Minsk FIR.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> Well, they recently &#8220;caused&#8221; a commercial aircraft to land and it is not entirely clear how secure the region is and if there are any safety implications for US operators at this time.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Egypt<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US operators are to exercise<strong> extra caution<\/strong> when operating over, within, in or out of the<strong> Sinai Peninsula within the HECC\/ Cairo FIR<\/strong> <strong>below FL260.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why? <\/strong>There\u00a0is ongoing fighting between military and extremist forces and they have anti-aircraft capable weapons.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Iran<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US operators are <strong>prohibited<\/strong> from operating<strong>\u00a0in the OIIX\/Tehran FIR.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> There are signifiant security and safety issues in the region and the US and Iran are not on the best of terms. There was also an aircraft shoot-down due to mis-identification of their anti aircraft defence systems.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Iraq<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US operators are<strong> prohibited<\/strong> from operating in the<strong> ORBB\/Baghdad FIR.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> Similar to Iran, there are heightened military activities and increased tensions which present and inadvertent risk to US civil aircraft due<strong> potential for mis-identification.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Kenya<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US operators are to exercise <strong>extra caution<\/strong> when operating over, within, in or out of <strong>Kenyan airspace east of 40 degrees East longitude (the border region with Somalia)<\/strong>, at altitudes<strong> below FL260.<\/strong> The caution applies to the ground as well.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> Because there\u2019s possible militant activity and with it a threat of damage to aircraft from mortars, rockets and anti-aircraft capable weapons.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>North Korea<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US operators are <strong>prohibited<\/strong> from operating in the<strong> ZKKP\/Pyongyang FIR, <\/strong>including the oceanic part of the ZKKP\/Pyongyang FIR over the Sea of Japan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> Because there are hazards and risk to civil aircraft safety from North Korea due their military capabilities and activities, including unannounced missile and air defense weapons testing.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Libya<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US operators are <strong>prohibited<\/strong> from overflying the <strong>HLLL\/Tripoli FIR<\/strong> except for altitudes at or above FL300 \u201coutside of Libyan territorial airspace\u201d &#8211; which is basically the international airspace over the southern Mediterranean Sea that is managed by Libya.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> Because of ongoing conflict between the government and the Libyan National Army over territory, government control and resources &#8211; and all this means fighting, often with weapons which could damage aircraft.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Mali<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US operators are to exercise <strong>extra caution<\/strong> when operating over, within, in or out of <strong>Mali below FL260.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> There is a risk of militant and extremist activity and mortars, rocket and anti aircraft fire.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Pakistan<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US operators are to exercise<strong> extra caution<\/strong> when operating over, within, in or out of Pakistan.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> There is a risk of militant and extremist activity and mortars, rocket and anti aircraft fire.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Persian Gulf<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Exercise<strong> caution<\/strong> operating in overwater airspace above the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman in the OKAC\/Kuwait, OEJD\/Jeddah, OBBB\/Bahrain, OOMM\/Muscat and OMAE\/Emirates FIRs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> There is a lot of military posturing and political tensions in the region and this bit is particularly close to the OIIX\/Tehran FIR which is prohibited for US operators.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Somalia<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US operators are <strong>prohibited<\/strong> operating <strong>below FL260<\/strong> in the airspace of Somalia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> There are active extremists in the region which pose a threat.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Syria<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US operators are<strong> prohibited <\/strong>from entering the<strong> OSTT\/Damascus FIR, <\/strong>and should <strong>exercise caution<\/strong> <strong>if within 200nm<\/strong> of Syrian airspace.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> It is a complex and ongoing conflict there, and it poses a risk to US operators.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Ukraine<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US operators are <strong>prohibited<\/strong> from entering the <strong>UKDV\/Dneptropetrovsk<\/strong> FIR (the UKFV\/Simferepol FIR is ok).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> There is ongoing military action and the potential for aircraft misidentification there.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Venezuela<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>All operations below <strong>FL260 are prohibited<\/strong> unless specifically approved or they need to for an<strong> emergency.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?\u00a0<\/strong>Mainly poor infrastructure, and political conflict between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\"><strong>Yemen<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>US operators are basically <strong>prohibited<\/strong> from overflying the landmass of Yemen, but certain offshore routes within the<strong> OYSC\/Sanaa FIR <\/strong>are allowed<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why?<\/strong> Because of ongoing fighting, instability and possible terrorist activity.<\/p>\n<h4>An even briefer summary<\/h4>\n<div id=\"attachment_14732\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/KICZ.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14732\" class=\"wp-image-14732 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/KICZ-1024x730.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/KICZ-1024x730.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/KICZ-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/KICZ-768x548.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/KICZ-1536x1096.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/08\/KICZ-2048x1461.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14732\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">US FAA KICZ and SFARs. Click to download PDF.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>For further information on the situation in each country and to see the prohibitions and restrictions recommended by other authorities, <a href=\"https:\/\/safeairspace.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">visit the SafeAirspace site.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The concept of<a href=\"https:\/\/safeairspace.net\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> SafeAirspace<\/a>\u00a0is this: to have <strong>a single source for all risk warnings<\/strong> issued about an individual country, independent of any political or commercial motivation, so that a pilot, flight dispatcher, security department, or anyone responsible for flight safety can quickly and easily see<strong> the current risk picture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4>Travel Advisories<\/h4>\n<p>Travel Advisories and Airspace Warnings are <strong>different things<\/strong>. But for US operators flying internationally, it&#8217;s worth checking out the latest country-specific <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.state.gov\/content\/travel\/en\/traveladvisories\/traveladvisories.html\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Travel Advisories issued by the US Dept of State<\/a>. Afghanistan\u2019s airspace is now effectively closed to overflights &#8211; the OAKX\/Kabul FIR is uncontrolled, and overflying traffic should route around the country. <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/faa-issues-emergency-order-for-afghanistan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Here is our latest update<\/a> on what is happening.<\/li>\n<li>The US reissued their <strong>Ukraine<\/strong> warnings in 2021. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/faa-issues-new-ukraine-warning\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">certain regions are Ukrainian airspace<\/a> are now deemed safe for overflight.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/uia-flight-752-iran-military-shot-down-plane-after-chain-of-errors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Information on the aircraft shootdown<\/a> in <strong>Iran<\/strong>, and ongoing concerns with their airspace safety.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Assessing the risk to routing over or into conflict zones<\/strong> is much more than just an \u201cis there a weapon down there?\u201d question. Gathering and sharing information on airspace risk is still one of the biggest barriers to safety.
