To keep things running smoothly there are a bunch of procedures to follow. We write about them a lot, especially when they change. From time to time questions continue to pop up that make us scratch our heads. And so we thought this might be a good chance to share a few of those with you &#8211; <em>naughty NAT conundrums<\/em> if you will.<\/p>\n<h4>To SLOP or not to SLOP?<\/h4>\n<p>Chances are if you fly in oceanic airspace you already heard of Strategic Lateral Offset Procedures (SLOP). They\u2019re pretty straightforward \u2013 you\u2019re supposed to <strong>offset up to 2nm right of track<\/strong> <strong>without needing a clearance<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>We do this because humans are fallible and mistakes can be made. Ironically the extreme accuracy of modern navigation systems mean that in the case of gross navigational errors, level busts or incorrect clearances, these systems actually <em>increase<\/em> the chance of a collision. So we pull over to the side of the road a little more, just in case.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do we have to SLOP?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re in the <strong>NAT HLA<\/strong> and your aircraft is capable then<strong> yes, it&#8217;s &#8216;required&#8217;<\/strong> (as per <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Mandatory-SLOP.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ICAO NAT Doc 007<\/a>). The only time you shouldn\u2019t is if your aircraft\u2019s FMS cannot automatically maintain an offset i.e. it doesn\u2019t have that function. In that case you &#8216;must&#8217; stay straight up the middle.<\/p>\n<p>Remember, your SLOP can be in<strong> increments of 0.1nm<\/strong> and &#8220;0 nm&#8221; SLOP is also a thing!<\/p>\n<p>You SLOP from the ENTRY point only, and need to have stopped the SLOP by the EXIT point.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Don&#8217;t go &#8216;direct to&#8217; the EXIT, this will put you on a different track. Cancel the SLOP to return to &#8216;centreline&#8217;<\/li>\n<li>Only SLOP from the ENTRY to the EXIT<\/li>\n<li>If you are routing from a NAR into the NAT, the last point is your entry into the NAT and you can SLOP from here<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>Can we SLOP in the Oceanic Transition Areas?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Or in other words in NOTA, SOTA, BOTA or GOTA? Good question.<\/p>\n<p><strong>NOTA and SOTA:<\/strong> The short answer is no. The slightly longer one is that the both NOTA and SOTA are under radar control with domestic separation from Shannon Radar. You should only apply SLOP between your oceanic entry and exit points.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BOTA:<\/strong> It\u2019s a similar story. BOTA radar control services are provided by Brest Control in France &#8211; essentially domestic rules still apply. GOTA (the Gander Oceanic Transition Area) is off the coast of North-eastern Canada. You should SLOP only once you have passed the Oceanic Entry Point (OEP) eastbound and within Oceanic Airspace &#8220;proper&#8221;, and vice versa westbound &#8211; sto SLOP at the Oceanic Exit Point (for example NIFTY on the chart below).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-26208\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GOTA-SLOP-NoSLOP-1024x829.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"829\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GOTA-SLOP-NoSLOP-1024x829.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GOTA-SLOP-NoSLOP-300x243.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GOTA-SLOP-NoSLOP-768x621.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GOTA-SLOP-NoSLOP-1536x1243.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/GOTA-SLOP-NoSLOP.jpg 2044w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Are there any other &#8216;gotchas&#8217;?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yes \u2013 three main ones:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>T<strong>he ENOB\/Bodo and BIRD\/Reykjavik FIRs.<\/strong> Look out for these. <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/Screen-Shot-2021-10-07-at-2.10.59-pm.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Buried in the NAT Doc 007<\/a> it says that you are only allowed to SLOP above FL285. So don\u2019t get caught out in the lower levels.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tango Routes T9 and T290.<\/strong> These lie just outside of BOTA airspace. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/nats-uk.ead-it.com\/cms-nats\/opencms\/en\/Publications\/AIP\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UK AIP ENR 3.5<\/a>, SLOP does not apply here.<\/li>\n<li>And whatever you do &#8211; <strong>never SLOP left!<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h4>What\u2019s the difference between the NAT Region and the NAT HLA?<\/h4>\n<p><strong>The NAT Region<\/strong> is virtually all of the non-domestic airspace over the Atlantic &#8211; from around 20 degrees north all the way up to the pole (excluding New York Oceanic West). It contains seven Oceanic Control Areas &#8211; BGGL\/Nuuk, BIRD\/Reykjavik, ENOB\/Bodo Oceanic, CZQX\/Gander, EGGX\/Shanwick, KZWY\/New York Oceanic East and LPPO\/Santa Maria.<\/p>\n<p><em>Within<\/em> the NAT region (and occupying a large amount of it) is the <strong>NAT HLA<\/strong>, which stands for <em>High Level Airspace<\/em>. It only exists from <strong>FL285 to FL420.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Because the NAT HLA is some of the busiest airspace in the world, there are a number of stringent navigation and communication requirements that you must meet to enter it. This includes being either RNP 4 or RNP 10 capable, having two independent long range navigation systems and in most cases, datalink. Operators also need state approval.<\/p>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t meant those requirements you can still fly through the NAT <em>Region<\/em>, but you&#8217;ll have to fly below or above the NAT\u00a0<em>HLA. <\/em>Blue Spruce routes are the exception, which allow aircraft with only one long range navigation system or limited comms equipment to enter.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15485\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15485\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15485\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/NAT-HLA-FINAL-2-1024x708.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/NAT-HLA-FINAL-2-1024x708.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/NAT-HLA-FINAL-2-300x207.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/NAT-HLA-FINAL-2-768x531.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/NAT-HLA-FINAL-2-1536x1062.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/NAT-HLA-FINAL-2.png 1892w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15485\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nat HLA Airspace (Flight Level 285 &#8211; 420)<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Can I fly across the North Atlantic without Datalink?<\/h4>\n<p>Yes, but it&#8217;s gonna be tricky.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/data-link-mandate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">North Atlantic Datalink Mandate (NAT DLM)<\/a> means aircraft need to have <strong>CPDLC and ADS-C<\/strong> to operate between <strong>FL290-FL410<\/strong> throughout the NAT Region.<\/p>\n<p><strong>There are a few exceptions where the NAT DLM does not apply:<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2013 Everything north of 80\u00b0North.<br \/>\n\u2013 New York Oceanic East FIR.<br \/>\n\u2013 Tango Routes T9 and T290. The other Tango Routes (T213, T13, T16) all require datalink.<br \/>\n\u2013 ATS Surveillance airspace, where surveillance service is provided by means of radar and\/or ADS-B, coupled with VHF.<\/p>\n<p>That last one about &#8220;ATS Surveillance airspace&#8221; is essentially just a section of airspace over Greenland and Iceland, which looks like this:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15575\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15575\" class=\"size-large wp-image-15575\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/NAT-chart-Blue-Spruce-Routes-1024x607.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"607\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/NAT-chart-Blue-Spruce-Routes-1024x607.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/NAT-chart-Blue-Spruce-Routes-300x178.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/NAT-chart-Blue-Spruce-Routes-768x456.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/NAT-chart-Blue-Spruce-Routes-1536x911.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/NAT-chart-Blue-Spruce-Routes-2048x1215.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-15575\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The blue shaded area shows the datalink exempt &#8220;ATS surveillance&#8221; airspace.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>So if you&#8217;re on a NAT crossing and you <strong>don&#8217;t have datalink<\/strong>, you technically have to <strong>stay below FL290 until you hit the blue shaded area<\/strong>. It\u2019s worth noting that aircraft without datalink can request to climb\/descend through datalink mandated airspace, but will only be considered on a \u201ctactical basis\u201d by ATC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Further south<\/strong>, there is another section of \u201cATS Surveillance Airspace\u201d in the area connecting the LPPC\/Lisboa FIR (i.e. mainland Portugal) to Madeira and the Azores, which is <strong>also exempt from the NAT DLM:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-16012\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Azores-ATS-surv-airspace-1024x805.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"805\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Azores-ATS-surv-airspace-1024x805.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Azores-ATS-surv-airspace-300x236.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Azores-ATS-surv-airspace-768x604.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Azores-ATS-surv-airspace-1536x1208.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Azores-ATS-surv-airspace.png 1592w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>So in theory, an Atlantic crossing without datalink would also be possible here &#8211; within the LPPO\/Santa Maria FIR you would just have to ensure that you stay below FL290 or above FL410 outside of the bubbles until you reach the KZWY\/New York FIR (where the NAT DLM does not apply).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong>Even further south<\/strong>, in the TTZP\/Piarco and GVSC\/Sal FIRs, CPDLC is the primary means of communication, but it&#8217;s still <strong>not mandatory<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><em>So down south, the bottom line is that as long as you stay out of the LPPO\/Santa Maria FIR between FL290-410 where the NAT DLM applies\u2026 except for the ATS Surveillance Airspace bubbles where it <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">doesn\u2019t<\/span> apply\u2026 then you\u2019ll be ok with just HF.
