And it makes sense.<\/p>\n<p>Modern technology has arguably rendered magnetic north obsolete. So why are we still using it? The simple answer is <strong><em>because we always have.<\/em><\/strong> Delve into ICAO Annex 4 and you\u2019ll see that bearings, tracks and radials must still be published in degrees magnetic. But this begs the question &#8211; <strong>do we actually need it anymore?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When humans first took to the skies, things were different. They needed a directional reference. Back in those days it had to be something simple and light \u2013 enter the <strong>magnetic compass<\/strong>. Nature was guiding the way because it had too.<\/p>\n<p>With modern navigation systems these days all the magic happens reference to <strong>true north<\/strong>. Inertial and GPS systems both use simple conversions so that the information can be displayed to crew as a magnetic reference to match our charts and procedures.<\/p>\n<p>But because we are still using magnetic north as a reference we are forced to deal with <strong>magnetic variation<\/strong> &#8211; the angular difference between the true and magnetic poles. It is an issue that costs the industry many millions of dollars a year to manage and can potentially lead to serious safety issues if things aren\u2019t handled properly on the ground and in the sky.<\/p>\n<h4>Let\u2019s get science-y.<\/h4>\n<p>The earth has its own magnetic field. That\u2019s because its outer core contains molten iron. Writhing lobes of magnetic flux surround the earth and meet near the top and bottom of the globe \u2013 the spots we know as the magnetic north and south pole.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13031\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13031\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13031\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/8VhZa-1024x410.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"410\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/8VhZa-1024x410.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/8VhZa-300x120.jpg 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/8VhZa-768x308.jpg 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/8VhZa-1536x615.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/8VhZa.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13031\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The earth&#8217;s ever changing magnetic field.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Open up a compass and the steel needle will align itself to the magnetic field lines around it and hey presto, it will point directly at the magnetic north pole.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But here\u2019s the problem<\/strong> &#8211; molten iron is a liquid, and it moves around. Which means the magnetic north pole does too. It never sits still. In fact in recent times it has put its foot down and is now moving close to 40 miles each year. Instead, they operate using a \u2018geodetic reference system\u2019 \u2013 a really fancy name for co-ordinates that may impress people at your next cocktail party.<\/p>\n<p>Two variables, the ol\u2019 lat and long, come together and allow us to define any spot on the surface of the earth.\u00a0All meridians of longitude are anchored to the <strong>true north pole<\/strong> because it <strong>never changes<\/strong>. It is simply the northern end of the axis around which the world and that globe on your desk spins.\u00a0Latitude on the other hand is reference to the equator which never moves either.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the only way either could change is if the earth\u2019s angle of tilt moved too in which case we\u2019d have bigger things to worry about.\u00a0So, when we combine the two we can divide the surface of the world into a grid and pinpoint exactly where we are \u2013 a process that both inertial and GPS systems use to stop us getting lost out there.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13036\" style=\"width: 1034px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13036\" class=\"size-large wp-image-13036\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-29-at-10.27.42-am-1024x817.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"817\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-29-at-10.27.42-am-1024x817.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-29-at-10.27.42-am-300x239.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-29-at-10.27.42-am-768x613.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-29-at-10.27.42-am-1536x1226.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-29-at-10.27.42-am-2048x1635.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13036\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lat and Long &#8211; anchored by the equator and earth&#8217;s axis of rotation.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>Here are the issues.<\/h4>\n<p>All of our procedures, bearings, tracks, VOR radials, even our runway designators are still presented in <strong>degrees magnetic<\/strong> because the regs say they have to be.<\/p>\n<p>And because of that every time the magnetic north pole moves, magnetic variation changes and the industry has to get out there and re-jig everything. Literally every computer that references magnetic north in some way has to be updated.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Magnetic Declination from 1590-2020\" width=\"1080\" height=\"810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/wL2a1jnE61E?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><em>Magnetic variation is constantly changing. Credit: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.noaa.gov\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NOAA<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p>All our IFR procedures from enroute, to terminal and approach phases have to be changed and re-published. Our FMS\u2019s have to be programmed to match too. VORs have to be rotated and navaids flight tested. Radars have to be realigned and airport signs replaced. Even runways have to be repainted. It literally costs ANSPs, airports, avionics manufacturers and operators millions.<\/p>\n<p>Take KTPA\/Tampa for example. In 2012 changes to variation forced the airport to renumber its primary runway, no less than 140 signs had to be replaced.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It is also a safety issue.<\/strong> The whole system depends on everyone updating everything at the same time which seldom happens. A small change can have a big impact too. The PBN systems we rely on to keep us safe can be compromised by changes to variation if not updated. Synthetic vision systems can begin to tell pilots lies.<\/p>\n<p>Anchorage in 2012 serves as a cautionary tale. The FAA updated its magnetic variation of the airport. <strong>Because operators didn\u2019t update their aircraft\u2019s avionics quickly enough, in some cases there was a mismatch.<\/strong> \u00a0Flight tests revealed that using the old value, Cat II and III approaches were no longer within lateral guidance limits \u00a0&#8211; not what you want to hear when you&#8217;re in the soup. The FAA temporarily changed procedures back to old value to allow time for operators to catch up.<\/p>\n<p>We know that it works too &#8211; Canada has been using conventional and PBN procedures using <strong>True North<\/strong> for some time throughout a huge chunk of its northern domestic airspace successfully, where magnetic references become unusable.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_13041\" style=\"width: 956px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13041\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13041\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-29-at-11.11.53-am.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"946\" height=\"990\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-29-at-11.11.53-am.png 946w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-29-at-11.11.53-am-287x300.png 287w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Screen-Shot-2021-04-29-at-11.11.53-am-768x804.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 946px) 100vw, 946px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-13041\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">True north operations in Canadian domestic airspace.<\/p><\/div>\n<h4>So why can\u2019t we just turn it off?<\/h4>\n<p>That\u2019s the beauty of it &#8211; <em>we can<\/em>. <strong>Technically, it\u2019s as simple as flicking a switch.<\/strong> Converting things from true to magnetic is just a process that we can just turn off. Rome wasn\u2019t built in a day and neither would a huge change to aviation procedures around the world. It would literally take years to implement.<\/p>\n<p>But that may be no excuse for change, otherwise we will <strong>continue to expose ourselves to known risks<\/strong>. Take <a href=\"https:\/\/fixingnotams.org\/reel-of-telegrams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Notams<\/a> for example. We are still communicating critical safety information using a format that has existed since 1924 \u2013 an invention for teleprinters.<\/p>\n<p>The industry is beginning to see that the status quo isn\u2019t necessarily the safest way forward.
