In June 2016, ICAO\u00a0updated\u00a0Doc 4444 (the Air Traffic Control bible) with <strong>Amendment 7<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>One of the main things this new bit does, <strong>is\u00a0to\u00a0change what the controller will say to the pilot<\/strong>, on a Standard Instrument Departure (SID), and on a Standard Instrument Arrival (STAR).<\/p>\n<p>The new phraseology headline is &#8220;CLIMB VIA&#8221; and &#8220;DESCEND VIA&#8221;, but there are many more new parts to it.<\/p>\n<p>So, here&#8217;s the problem. Doc 4444 is the master document, but each country has to implement the changes. And many are not &#8211; because they haven&#8217;t had time to train the controllers, or because they haven&#8217;t done a safety case (ie. figured out if anything in the new phraseologies might be dangerous), or &#8230; other reasons.<\/p>\n<p>Some states have even published AIC&#8217;s to say that they <strong>won&#8217;t<\/strong> be implementing the changes (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?sa=t&amp;rct=j&amp;q=&amp;esrc=s&amp;source=web&amp;cd=1&amp;ved=0ahUKEwjW17bDh4rQAhXB3SYKHSEYDFkQFggbMAA&amp;url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.airservicesaustralia.com%2Faip%2Fcurrent%2Fsup%2Fa16-h33.pdf&amp;usg=AFQjCNEPbuE1gdQ6yRsej64d7-nxrIhK1A&amp;bvm=bv.137132246,d.eWE&amp;cad=rja\">Australia<\/a>, Switzerland). Others have already published the changes (<a href=\"http:\/\/eaip.samgongustofa.is\/AMDT_004_2016_14_OCT_2016.pdf\">Iceland<\/a>, for example).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Confusing? You bet.
