{"id":11005,"date":"2021-05-04T10:26:57","date_gmt":"2021-05-04T14:26:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/?p=11005"},"modified":"2021-05-06T05:49:27","modified_gmt":"2021-05-06T09:49:27","slug":"new-airspace-warning-western-sahara","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/new-airspace-warning-western-sahara\/","title":{"rendered":"Western Sahara Airspace Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">On May 4, the GCCC\/Canarias FIR <strong>updated their airspace warning<\/strong> for Western Sahara, due to the ongoing conflict there.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Previously, they said that aircraft overflights should be completely avoided in the eastern part of the country (i.e. airways UY601 and UN728), and should not be below FL245 in the western part. What\u2019s really important is exactly what is missing: <u>why.<\/u><\/p>\n<p>The answer: <strong>Because the airways are over an<\/strong> <strong>active conflict zone, with a known threat of anti-aircraft fire. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Western Sahara is effectively divided straight down the middle, literally by a wall. Morocco controls one side, while the region\u2019s independence movement (the Polisario) controls the other.\u00a0In Nov 2020, the Polisario declared war on Morocco.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/foreign-travel-advice\/western-sahara\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-11030 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/UK-FCO-Western-Sahara-map-1024x742.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"742\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/UK-FCO-Western-Sahara-map-1024x742.png 1024w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/UK-FCO-Western-Sahara-map-300x217.png 300w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/UK-FCO-Western-Sahara-map-768x556.png 768w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/UK-FCO-Western-Sahara-map-1536x1113.png 1536w, https:\/\/ops.group\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/UK-FCO-Western-Sahara-map-2048x1484.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h4>Why do they want to fight?<\/h4>\n<p>The two have never gotten along. <strong>The Polisario want independence<\/strong> and were at war with the Moroccan Government for a very long time, until a fragile ceasefire agreement in 1991. Since then there has always been tension.<\/p>\n<p>In early Nov 2020, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moroccoworldnews.com\/2020\/11\/325060\/blocked-by-polisario-200-moroccan-truckers-in-guerguerat-cry-for-help\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Polisario protest<\/a> blocked a whole bunch of Moroccan truck drivers at the border with Mauritania, shutting down an essential route that connects Morocco to the rest of Sub-Saharan Africa. Morocco weren\u2019t happy, and <strong>breached the ceasefire agreement<\/strong> by sending forces into the demilitarized zone to remove them.<\/p>\n<p>The Polisario immediately <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/2020\/11\/17\/sahrawi-arab-democratic-republic-declares-war-on-morocco-over-western-sahara-region\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">declared war<\/a> on Morocco, and clashes began straight away.<\/p>\n<h4>Why does it matter?<\/h4>\n<p>The FAA were onto it when they immediately carried out a risk assessment and <a href=\"https:\/\/safeairspace.net\/western-sahara\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">published a notice<\/a>. The big deal is that the Polisario are likely to have access to <strong>anti-aircraft weaponry<\/strong> left over from the previous war. This includes man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS) and surface-to-air missiles. It wouldn\u2019t be the first time an aircraft has been shot down there either &#8211; <strong>the Polisario downed two DC-7 airliners<\/strong> with missiles back in 1988.<\/p>\n<h4>What about airspace?<\/h4>\n<p>The sky over Western Sahara airspace is split between two FIRs \u2013<strong>GCCC\/Canarias<\/strong> and <strong>GOOO\/Dakar<\/strong>. If the conflict escalates further, this is likely to complicate things.<\/p>\n<p>So far there has been only one warning from the Canarias side \u2013 the NOTAM above. <strong>Nothing from Dakar yet.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are currently <strong>three major airways<\/strong> affected. Two of them (UY601 and UT975) run the length of the region in a south westerly direction \u2013 likely to be used by aircraft transiting some routes between <strong>Europe and South America.<\/strong> The other airway, UN728 is a direct track from the coast to <strong>GCTS\/Tenerife<\/strong> which may be used by smaller aircraft or those doing tech stops in the <strong>Canary Islands.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>So if you\u2019re \u00a0planning flights to the Canaries, or overflying central Africa, pay close attention to the risks involved.
